The Fledgling Hunter 52
Pete...? Do I hear you talking all sorts of nonsense over there again?
Pete...? You saw that, right? Your friend there has skill. I wish you shot half as well.
Sure you do. Now, speaking of lazy, what'd you find out about that fellow way over there?
Pete...? Did I hear that man mumble something about honey?
You remember the old Hunter's rhyme, right? "Belly on empty? Eat honey aplenty!"
That's what Granny did, back in the day. So fetch that poor Hunter some!
Well, that's my Pete. Boy's like a cannonball. Either sits around—or goes off in a flash.
So, you see, Pete's really a good boy. He just gets ahead of himself. Yes, he's a total nincompoop—
But he's a lovable nincompoop—despite his big head and the way he always flaps his mouth.
Maybe. Still, I do think my Pete's got what it takes to be an excellent Hunter.
Problem is, he just thinks too highly of himself, and he hasn't done squat yet.
What Pete needs is to be knocked down a peg.
I'm sure it has, Fern, but you're far too gentle in your ways. He needs to be shown up.
And you, [Player], are the one to do it!
Now, now—don't say no. Pete needs this. Here. I'll even teach you one of Granny's techniques.
If you use that technique, you'll be able to hunt prey more easily.
Now go get that Hootwink, [Player].
Isn't it lovely, Fern? Helping two new Hunters?
Granny has lived long enough to know a fair share of new Hunters. We all start somewhere.
And as for this one...?
If [Player] does get that owl first, I want you to take ←(
Promise me.
Thank you, Fern. I can always count on you to respect old Granny's wishes.
You want to go too, Lucky?
Lucky's a good hunting dog, [Player].
And since Hootwinks are good at hiding...
I think you'll be glad to have his nose to help you during the hunt.
Ha! Granny knew you'd beat my Pete!
Pete! Don't be a spoilsport!
Granny, nothing! You should be glad to see a fellow Hunter be this good from the get-go.
Besides, Granny thinks you're just fine in your own special way.
Ugh, Pete. I'm trying to be nice. But you're not making it easy for your old Granny. You're lazy.
Oh, I see. Of course. How could Granny have been so silly?
Seeing you dozing all day long, snoozing away...?
Snoring so loudly, it shakes the fleece off Granny's sheep...?
Well, from now on, forget being a Hunter. You're now the kingdom's first Snorer!
End of story, Pete.
Now, as for you, [Player]!
Listen here. I won't say this twice.
Thank you—for everything.
And here. Take this.
Oh, Pete. Why would I scold this fine Hunter? ←(
And that's that—my work here is done.
Except for one last thing... Fern?
Nothing Granny likes more than a good ol' hunt to see who can catch the prey first.
Granny might be old, but her eyes are still keen. My grandson's on the other side of the pen. He's not practicing like he should be.
Granny hasn't just stared at sheep all her days. I know my way around a bow. First, equip it. To find your bow, open Menu and then tap Gear.
Careful when you shoot the target there. Don't make Granny scold you.
Who is that man come stumbling into Granny's pasture and drinking up all my water? Hmmph.
Granny thinks it's about time someone gets that man in my pasture some honey.
Granny looks like she just sits here, but it's just so she can give advice. Such as, "Don't forget to eat!"
If you got that Hootwink, tell Fern there, not me!
Reserve2 30
He is a pain, isn't he?
Oh, I'm just joshing. He's a good kid really.
He's got a big mouth, a big head, and the tiniest bit of patience you ever did see!
Oh, is that how you think of me?
All I'm suggesting is that it'll serve him well when he makes a mistake because of his impatience.
Aha! I've had a wonderful idea!
Ha ha! Oh...cynical as ever, Fern. Or maybe you're just a realist, I don't even know anymore.
Regardless, [Player], listen up!
I got a little technique I could teach you.
It's a useful technique that can help you defeat enemies, when they seem too powerful for you.
Think you can defeat the Hootwink before Pete?
He'll taste his first slice of humble pie, and hopefully he'll start training properly!
You want to go along too, Lucky?
That's not a bad idea. [Player], you should take Lucky along with you.
Hootwinks are very good at blending in with their, environments, so Lucky will be good to have around.
He'll be able to sniff out that critter!
Ha ha! Just as I thought!
Pete!
Come here!
You've done nothin' but laze around instead of trainin'. That's why you lost your little contest here!
Sorries won't make you any better. Some "Hunter of the Kingdom"! Anyway, [Player]...
Thank you for the help today!

*yaaaawn* Oh, you'll have to excuse old Granny Cotton. Counting sheep puts me to sleep.
*...zzz...*
Look out for Pete, won't you? I'd like it if you two were friends. You're a good influence on him. I don't want my Pete turning out like...him. Who's him, you say? Never you mind.
No, I can't have my Pete turning out like...him. Oh, don't mind me. As for who "him" might be, don't you worry your head—just a man from Granny Cotton's past.
Pete's a little too much like...him, no matter what Pete tells his Granny Cotton. He says he's got to be a Hunter to be popular with the girls...but what girl would marry a Hunter? Anyone who wants a family should settle down, take care of sheep—not vanish into the woods!
So you're an Apprentice now, are you? You've made Granny Cotton proud. Take this. It's something I made using Wool from my sheep—and some Animal Hide that Fern gave me. You know, I'm also a Tailor, so making this sort of thing is a cinch.
You might want to consider taking another Life as a Tailor, like old Granny Cotton did. Then you could use the materials you find as a Hunter and make your own clothing and shoes.
The longer I watch Pete grow up, the more it's clear he gets his personality from...him. Pete's good at heart, but he sometimes gets so carried away—he gets carried right off! And he wants to be a renowned Hunter, just like... him. Hmm. I guess I could tell you who "him" was. I'm speaking of my husband...Pete's grandfather. Oh, that man knew how to use a bow! And he got carried away with hunting, carried off to Al Maajik—where he had a hunting buddy. I wonder if his friend is still with us, all the way off in Al Maajik? Look him up if you go there. He taught my husband a thing or two about hunting. I'm sure he'd have something to teach you too.
I do wonder if my husband's old hunting buddy is still living in Al Maajik... He was always interested in strange, powerful birds. Try to find him if you'd like to hear of such things.
Have you heard of the Blizzard Bird that roams Tortuga Archipelago? My husband always dreamed of hunting down that strange, fearsome bird. Pete's been talking about it a lot recently too. I wish he would stay away from such dangerous hunts.
I don't want to stop Pete from being a great Hunter. It's his dream, but this Life can be so hard.
So you became a Master, did you? Nicely done, child. I'm sure Fern must be proud of you. Now if you're thinking of hunting any ferocious birds, Granny Cotton has some advice for you. You'll want the best bow possible, of course, and you might be tempted to try to buy one. But why not go as far as you can in the Carpenter Life...and make your own? That might seem a long way for a Hunter to get a bow, but you'll learn more about yourself doing so. Yes, the doing is the true reward. I must admit I learned that bit of wisdom from my husband.
A Hunter really should take up at least one other Life, if not many of them. Just think...a Hunter who can make bows as a Carpenter is so self-sufficient!
So you're a Hero now, are you? Everyone will be talking about that, I'm sure. I think you're having a good effect on my Pete, [Player]. He's been working harder lately. I might even trust him to look after my sheep here someday. But I doubt that's what he wants.
I've heard that Pete's been begging Fern to take him more seriously. I have to admit... I think you've had a very good influence on him.
My child, how exciting! You've reached the Legend rank? Already? Granny Cotton is thrilled! I knew you would excel at the Hunter Life from the moment I first saw you use your bow. And Fern has agreed to help Pete more with his hunting, now that he's taking it more seriously. It's nice when Granny Cotton's plans all work out in the end.
Please keep looking out for my Pete—and Fern too. We Hunters need to take care of our own. Why, just look at the good influence you've had on a lazy sheepherder and a solitary teacher! I think I'd even say you're all good friends now.
You'll make old Granny Cotton happy if you look out for Pete and Fern. Be good friends to each other.
Are you aiming even higher than the Legend rank, child? You'll achieve it for sure. But if you'll listen to old Granny Cotton for a bit, I'll spin you a bit of homey wisdom. Push your limits, but don't cross them too soon. Many a Hunter has fallen prey to overconfidence. But I suppose what would also help you go far is a little gift from Granny Cotton.
I hope Pete doesn't push himself past his limits one day. He often bites off more than he can chew.
My, my, my...you've made Creator rank? What a remarkable Hunter you've turned out to be! And my Pete, well, I'm sure he'll be as proud of your accomplishment as if it was his own! Congratulations, child.
Fern's told me that Pete has been doing nicely of late. He's learning to be a real Hunter. You know, deep down...in his heart. Fern says he's learned lots about the Hunter's Life by watching you.
