The Fledgling Mercenary 47
*ahem* Cervantes?
Perhaps you'd better leave it there. Your little chats
do tend to go on...and on...
You don't want to scare the poor ←*
I see old Cervantes just gave you your first
greatsword. Congratulations!
Master Cervantes can drone on a bit.
But he really is a great man—and a great guide for
beginning Mercenaries.
Anyhow, if you're looking to try out that new
claymore, I can point you in the right direction.
We've had some reports of monster trouble over
at Giles's farm.
But I'm afraid I don't have many details. I don't even
know what kinds of monsters you can expect.
I'm sure it's nothing too dangerous—just a bit of
standard farm-monster trouble.
This is all part of being a Mercenary. You'll get a lot
of monster-fightin' jobs.
You have to weigh the demands of a given task
against your abilities and decide if you're up to it.
It's a simple Life, but it's definitely a rewarding one.
A most worthy calling!
Ahh...you may want to get going before he starts
talking again. I'm sure you'll do fine!
...Oh, one more thing...
I sent my son over there a while ago to check on
things, but he hasn't come back yet.
His name's Jude. He's a Novice Mercenary like you.
I'm not worried. If there was any trouble, I'm sure
he...um...found a good hiding spot...
If you run into him, maybe you two can team up.
You'd better get going, ←*
Giles! What's wrong?
Razorbeaks are dangerous!
Why in the world would one show up around here?
Jude...I'm impressed that you took it upon yourself
to help out!
You two were friends once, weren't you,
Master Cervantes?
Not unlike Jude and young [Name 3] here!
Working together to beat even the strongest of foes.
Oh, really? Well, I'm sure it was more of a friendly
rivalry between two fellow Mercenaries.
Ha ha! Well, even that statement sounded a bit more
confident than before!
Hmm... Perhaps that's true...
Hold on, Cervantes!
Ah, a new, young Mercenary! You'd best speak to
that older chap over there.
Somehow I doubt Jude has figured out how to swing
his greatsword yet...
I'd appreciate it if you'd look out for my boy.
Have you sorted things out at the farm? Giles's place
is over in South Castele.
So it was some Carrottys causing the trouble all
along! You did well, especially for your first job!
A Razorbeak is more dangerous than some pesky
Carrottys, but I'm sure you'll be fine, [Name 1].
You managed to beat that Razorbeak already?
Great job!
Oho! What a shame, Master Cervantes! You won't be
able to thrill ←(
No need to get upset, Master Cervantes. Give the

Here he goes again...
He can be a real pain. Guess you're getting that
explanation you didn't ask for!

Congratulations! He finally gave you your license!
I'll tell all the other Mercenaries I know that there's a
new youngster in the ranks.
They'll treat you just as if you'd completed
the training.
Don't forget to report back to Master Cervantes
after you complete Mercenary challenges.

You'll find a lot of folks in need of help.
And usually they're asking you to

Think of this job as a

Indeed... By the way, Cervantes...
Miguel came by earlier.
Errr...
Oh, really? I thought it was more of a
friendly rivalry between two great Mercenaries.
Well, I have to say...age certainly hasn't affected the
sharpness of your tongue—or his.

The Fledgling Blacksmith 5
Hello, Magmia! Sorry, but the old man isn't here.
It was the strangest thing. He took off right in the
middle of Harmony's set.
Tell me about it! Most of the time I can't get him out
of here.
But today he didn't look up at the stage even once.
Just kept on reading some letter.
I can't believe ol' Steele left in the middle of
Harmony's song. What gives?
Chat 22
Life is like the round water mark each glass placed
upon this old counter leaves behind.
Please don't ask me why. I haven't discovered the
reason yet...
Hmm. I wonder what wonderful jokes and chance
romances will be born here this evening...
What fateful encounters will change the courses of
their participants' lives?
Congratulations, young ←*
Ah, I beg your pardon, but I'm rather busy at the
moment. Could you possibly come back later?
The most important Stats for anyone using a
greatsword are Strength and Vitality.
It's key that you strike a good balance between them.
Then again, I'm sure Master Cervantes would tell you
that it's all about "fighting spirit" or something...
The most important Stats for a Mercenary are
Strength and Vitality.
You would do well to remember that. Without those,
you cannot hope to rightly wield a greatsword.
Santos, captain of Port Puerto's elite guard, is
actually a noted Mercenary.
He used to shine bright as a fine blade caught in the
midday sun among the young Mercenaries.
Nowadays he's too weighed down by his glittering
finery to fight.
But despite his flaws, he's in charge of Port Puerto's
elite guard. Truthfully, they're in good hands.
He's an interesting man, so it may be worth your
while to go and see him.
Ah, good to see you. Do you have a moment? I'd like
to share something with you.
As you are aware, my son Jude is also a Mercenary.
However, he doesn't really seem to be... Well, he's
not exactly growing into the job.
He idolizes Master Cervantes, as well he should, but
something's missing.
I just wish he would emulate his Master's positive
approach to his work.
If he only had that, I'm sure he would be able to
grow into a fine Mercenary...
Of course, as his father, perhaps I'm being more
optimistic about his chances than I should.
But still, that's a parent's job. Who will believe in our
children if we don't?
Anyway, I mustn't go on. Thanks for lending an ear.
Here. Take this in thanks. Rather good batch today!
If you try out cooking for yourself, you might just be
able to make great food like I do.
And good food is good for the body. Maybe I could
teach you someday.
Roast Mutton, for example, boosts your Strength,
while a good Boiled Egg will improve your Vitality.
If you wash it down with Barley Juice to recover SP,
you have a perfect menu for any Mercenary!
It goes down well with Woodcutters and Miners too.
Oh, and there's the Blacksmiths and Carpenters!
But a different Life will use a different Stat class, so
you should know which food suits your needs.
My son has a bad habit. He tries to put on this
tough-Mercenary act around others.
But you! You're the real deal! You look the part.
From what I've seen, you have the skills to back it up.
Would you perhaps show my son how it's done?
Ha ha. I'm joking, of course... Don't tell
Master Cervantes.
*sigh* Recently, my staff has been slacking off a lot.
But they're not all bad.
They might burden you with requests to fetch
ingredients and such.
If they do, I would appreciate it if you would help
them out, even if they should be doing it.
I hear you're a Master now? Congratulations! My son
really looks up to you.
Ah, that reminds me! Today, I heard some news that
may be of interest to a Master such as yourself.
You know of the floating island, Terra Nimbus, yes?
Well, it seems the mythical Chimera dwells there.
If you could defeat it—or if you already have—you'd
be one step closer to being a true Mercenary Hero!
After all, Mercenaries are only as good as the foes
they conquer! So how about it?
A floating island high up in the sky... That seems to
be where the mythical Chimera dwells.
But does such a place really exist?
Santos is so obsessed with preparing to fight mighty
foes that he is blind to anything else.
He's even completely broke, having spent all his
fortunes on medicines and equipment.
Thankfully, Master Andy of Port Puerto saw this and
is kindly taking care of Santos's finances.
Santos spent his money on servants and all the finest
equipment while honing his fighting skills.
But at some point along the line, he must have
realized his spending was out of control.
Despite Santos's tough act, I think he knows he
would not be where he is without Master Andy.
Alongside the mythical Chimera I told you about
before, there are other legendary beasts.
Generations of Mercenaries have sought to defeat
them in epic battles.
There is the great flame beast, the Gigante, and the
mighty Ferociousaurus.
And of course, there is the Lord of the Dead, said to
be the servant of the Dark Sultan himself.
If you could defeat them, it would be worth hauling
their Bounty to a Bounty Clerk.
I bet it would be worth some Dosh!
The mythical Chimera, the flaming Gigante, the
mighty Ferociousaurus...
and of course, the Lord of the Dead, servant to the
Dark Sultan himself, or so it's said.
Each of them possesses incredible strength. You
should take great care if you plan to challenge them.
Congratulations! I hear you have finally reached
Legend rank!
I have been simply thrilled by your exploits up to now
on your road to becoming a Legend.
Tales of your adventures will long be remembered
here in the Crown.
Ah, I hear you have decided to start walking another
path in Life.
How did I know? Well, I do have my sources!
Hah hah!
All information eventually finds its way to this place
and to my ears.
Anyway, I'm behind you all the way. I hope everything
goes well for you.
Hah hah hah! Just hearing about your work fires me
right up!
Once, someone was telling a tale about you, and I
got so tense that I broke the glass I was holding!
...Ouch! I really must be more careful...
Let's all raise a glass for [Player],
the most glorious of Mercenaries!
