Script (359 lines)

CervantesWell, well. Who do we have here?
CervantesAnother starry-eyed kid dreaming of becoming a Mercenary, eh? You've got guts,
CervantesBut I must say...the Mercenary Life is difficult.
CervantesYou must be ready to fight tooth and nail against fearsome beasts! Do you think you're up for that?
CervantesI hope you know what you're getting into! You need keen senses and a quick reaction time in battle!
CervantesA Mercenary depends on sharp swords and strong arms, you know.
CervantesBut there's a lot more to it than that!
CervantesMercenaries always see their quests through to the end.
CervantesThey laugh in the face of danger and throw caution to the wind!
CervantesYou must stay in the fight, no matter how big or how fearsome your enemy is!
CervantesEven if that enemy is an enormous, scaly, fire-breathing dragon!
CervantesWhy, a true Mercenary stands tall, blade in hand, gallantly facing down all foes.
CervantesEven the strongest of monsters are no match!
CervantesDid I mention the sharp swords? Yes, I think I did. It's worth repeating, though.
CervantesAnd, of course, a Mercenary carries no shield other than an abundance of confidence.
CervantesIf you're still set on taking up this Life after hearing everything I just told you...
Cervantesyou might just have the grit to become truly great.
CervantesPerhaps I should regale you with a few tales of Legendary Mercenaries from times past...
Bard*ahem* Cervantes?
BardPerhaps you'd better leave it there. Your little chats do tend to go on...and on...
BardYou don't want to scare the poor
CervantesHrmph. I was just getting to the best stuff...
CervantesOh well. It's my job to train new Mercs, not frighten 'em off.
CervantesSo I'll give you the chance to be my trainee. But first you'll need something no Mercenary can do without.
CervantesWe'll call it a gift—a present from me to start you on the road to becoming a mighty Hero!
CervantesTrue strength lies in honing your own skills. Without training, even the greatest talent withers.
CervantesWith that blade in hand, you'll explore the world and test your mettle against the mightiest of foes!
CervantesGahahaha! I kid, I kid.
CervantesLet's not get ahead of ourselves. We'll start off with something a little less...grand in scale.
CervantesDon't get me wrong! We'll find a good test for you— quelling some local disturbance or something.
CervantesPerhaps the fine chap behind the counter over there has some work for you.

BardI see old Cervantes just gave you your first greatsword. Congratulations!
BardMaster Cervantes can drone on a bit.
BardBut he really is a great man—and a great guide for beginning Mercenaries.
BardAnyhow, if you're looking to try out that new claymore, I can point you in the right direction.
BardWe've had some reports of monster trouble over at Giles's farm.
BardBut I'm afraid I don't have many details. I don't even know what kinds of monsters you can expect.
BardI'm sure it's nothing too dangerous—just a bit of standard farm-monster trouble.
BardThis is all part of being a Mercenary. You'll get a lot of monster-fightin' jobs.
BardYou have to weigh the demands of a given task against your abilities and decide if you're up to it.
BardIt's a simple Life, but it's definitely a rewarding one. A most worthy calling!
CervantesIndeed!
CervantesSeems you've picked up a pearl of wisdom or two from my many tales, Bard!
BardAhh...you may want to get going before he starts talking again. I'm sure you'll do fine!
Bard...Oh, one more thing...
BardI sent my son over there a while ago to check on things, but he hasn't come back yet.
BardHis name's Jude. He's a Novice Mercenary like you.
BardI'm not worried. If there was any trouble, I'm sure he...um...found a good hiding spot...
BardIf you run into him, maybe you two can team up.
CervantesExcellent idea!
CervantesYou can learn some basics of swordplay from young Jude while you're at it!
CervantesThat greatsword I gave you is big and heavy. Wielding it is all about grip, you know.
CervantesThat is to say, the best swordsperson isn't necessarily the strongest...
BardYou'd better get going,

JudeWaaaaah! Oh! Whew!
JudeI thought you were my father... Don't scare me like that!
JudeHuh? Yeah, I'm supposed to be investigating some reports of monster trouble at Giles's farm.
JudeSay, you look like a Mercenary too. Wait. Did my father tell you to find me? He did, didn't he?!
JudeI dreamed of becoming a Merc my entire Life. But it's a lot more scary...er...difficult than I realized.
JudeMy father's been telling me epic Mercenary stories since I was a little kid.
JudeAnd Master Cervantes... You get him going, and he'll tell you Merc tales for hours.
JudeI think I've heard all of his stories—Legendary Mercs, blades swinging, fighting fearsome beasts...
Judeadventures through forests, over deserts, across the ocean—even to islands in the sky!
JudeI'm sure he made some of it up, of course. But I always hung on every word.
JudeI've wanted to be a hero since the very first story.
Jude*sigh*
JudeMaster Cervantes doesn't expect you to get your greatsword training from me, does he?
JudeUh-oh. He must think I've already mastered the techniques.
JudeBut these things are so heavy! I can barely lift a greatsword, let alone swing one.
JudeI do have an idea, though. I know a place where...
JudeHey, what was your name again?
Jude[Name 1]?
JudeAll right, then, [Name 1], let's head out!
JudeI think I know a spot in West Castele where we can train!

JudeHere we go. We call this the Proving Stone. Many Mercenaries have used it to sharpen their skills.
JudeCervantes once told me if you can break a stone like this with your blade...
Judeyou have the makings of a great Mercenary. Only...
Judeit seems impossible, doesn't it?
JudeHe did say there's some kind of secret to it...
JudeMaybe you just hold your sword out and go... HYAAAA! Right? That should work.
JudeHYAAAA! .........
JudeHuh. Why didn't that work? My "HYAAAA" was pure gold!
JudeI mean, sure, I was too worried about hurting my hands to actually SWING my sword, but...
JudeAw, who am I kidding? I'll never be a real Mercenary!
JudeI can't believe Master Cervantes wants ME to teach YOU about swinging a sword.
MiguelWhat's all the fuss over there?
JudeWhaaat? Who are you?
MiguelNever mind who I am! Your blubbering is keeping me from my nap!
MiguelHold on a sec. What are you doing with this old Proving Stone? Don't tell me you're training!
JudeYou know about this stone?
MiguelHmmm... You could say that, I suppose...
MiguelHow about I show you two kids the ol' Provin' Stone trick?
MiguelFor starters, your stance is all wrong. When it comes to greatswords, technique trumps power...like so!
MiguelYou got it?
JudeN-not really...
MiguelYou. Over there. The quiet one. Why don't you give it a go?
MiguelYou don't need that much power to wield a greatsword effectively.
MiguelThe most important thing is your grip. Equip your claymore. Then speak to me.

MiguelYou've equipped your blade? Good.
MiguelHold the sword as I showed you before. Then try swinging it at the Proving Stone.
MiguelYou don't need to swing it hard. Let the sword do the work. And keep swingin'!
★ Next Location: West Castele

JudeWhat? You broke it?! Th...that's incredible!
MiguelHa ha!
MiguelThe quiet one's not too shabby with a blade! Not too shabby at all!
MiguelRight. Now I'm going to try to get some shut-eye before anyone else comes along and disturbs me...
JudeHuh? He's gone. Just like that.
JudeWho in the world was that old Plushling?
JudeWell, anyway... I can't believe you actually broke that stone!
JudeHey! I bet you'd be great in a fight! You should help me sort things out at the farm!
JudeI'm pretty sure my father and Master Cervantes want you to help me...
JudeGood thing, since I'm not too great on my own. I took the job, but now I'm not sure I'm up to it...
JudeBut I bet we'll be fine if we go together. C'mon, [Player]! Let's get over to Giles's farm!

JudeWaah! More of 'em!
JudeThat's too m-m-many! I c-c-can't d-d-do it!
Jude[Name 1]! You've got this, right?
JudeYeah, you've got this. You've already got this whole greatsword thing figured out...
JudeI'll go stand in a safe spot over there and...er...give you tactical advice!
JudeI'm sure you'll be fine, [Name 1]. They're no match for a stone-cold stone breaker!

CervantesWell, well! Back from your first job! And you broke the Proving Stone? Impressive!
JudeWell...an old Plushling showed us the trick to doing it.
Cervantes...An old Plushling, you say?
JudeYeah. He sure seemed to know a lot about greatswords. Is he a friend of yours?
CervantesHmm... I wonder if it was him...
GilesHaa...haa...help! It's awful!
BardGiles! What's wrong?
GilesHaa...haa...need ta catch me breath... Well...haa... basically...haa...
GilesIt's...haa...erm...haa...
GilesHaa! Yes! I came ta say thanks ta the two young'uns.
GilesI forgots ta say it before, but I'm right grateful fer all yer help.
JudeUm...no problem. But didn't you say something was "awful"?
GilesYer right! I did say that, didn't I? There IS sumthin' awful goin' on!
GilesOne o' them Razorbeaks is loose in my friend's field in West Castele!
CervantesIs that so?
BardRazorbeaks are dangerous!
JudeD-dangerous?
BardWhy in the world would one show up around here?
GilesWell, if ya feels so inclined, ask it yerself! At this rate, that field'll be torn ta pieces!
CervantesNow hold on, Giles.
JudeD-don't look at me! I can't do it!
CervantesWell, I guess this task falls to you, [Name 2]!
GilesGreat! Let's get it done, then!
CervantesTo be given such a challenge on your first day as a Mercenary... That's quite an unusual honor.
GilesWhat?! Yer sayin' this here Mercenary's brand- spankin' new?!
JudeIt's too dangerous, Master Cervantes!
JudeThis isn't just a buncha bratty Carrots! This is a dangerous beast!
CervantesAh, but this young
CervantesListen up, [Name 2]!
CervantesSometimes a Mercenary has to put aside thoughts of personal safety.
CervantesWhen vicious monsters are on the loose...well, this is just what we do!
CervantesWe Mercenaries train every day preparing to face such foes.
CervantesBut let me ask you this: What is a Mercenary's greatest enemy?
GilesOhhh! I know! I know! Vicious veggies what's attackin' folks?
CervantesUh...good guess. But no.
CervantesYou in particular should be quite familiar with the answer, Jude.
CervantesWhat are you feeling right now, lad?
JudeN-now? Umm...I guess...f-f-fear?
CervantesThat...is the correct answer!
Cervantes[Name 2], you still haven't tasted true fear.
CervantesThat makes you perfect for this task.
CervantesWill you stand tall and face your foe? Or will you fall into the depths of fear, sniveling all the way?
JudeHey!
CervantesToss 'em into the fray! I've always thought that was the best way to train young Mercs.
CervantesI'm like a mother eagle pushing her young out of the nest. That's how I must send you on your way!
GilesPer'aps I'm askin' a bit much...
CervantesBut I won't just shove you out into the wild with no guidance. I've a special technique to teach you.
CervantesNow, [Name 2], take your blade and carve your way through this adventure!

ReggiePlease protect my field! I'm begging you!
MiguelOhoho! Quite the responsibility you've been given!
MiguelI thought I'd come and help this poor fellow...
MiguelBut perhaps I'll leave it to the younger generation this time...
MiguelThe Life of a Mercenary is full of pressures like this. Can you overcome this foe?
JudeWaaaait!
MiguelAh! Another hatchling Mercenary!
Jude[Name 1]! Let me help you!
MiguelTwo hatchlings and one wanted rooster...
MiguelThis encounter grows more and more intriguing. I shall watch with great interest...
MiguelThough I suppose I ought to offer some help. Here. Take this.
JudeTh-that's the beast we're facing? M-maybe I'm not ready after all...
JudeNo! I AM a Mercenary! I WILL fight! I'm not hiding this time, [Name 1]!

MiguelHmm... Imagine that.
MiguelTwo young Mercenaries managed to take down a Razorbeak.
ReggieDern right they did! They saved my field!
MiguelI must ask—who is training you youngsters? It wouldn't be Cervantes, would it?
MiguelYes, of course it is.
MiguelLooks like he's got his hands on a couple of promising talents, heh heh!
JudeYou know Master Cervantes?
MiguelYou could say that...
MiguelAnyway, my name is Miguel. I look forward to seeing how you progress.
MiguelOnce you've honed your skills a bit more, come find me in Al Maajik.

CervantesAh, you're back!
CervantesYou don't have to say a word. I can tell how it went just by looking at you!
BardJude...I'm impressed that you took it upon yourself to help out!
JudeWell, I was still scared, but thinking of all those tales of great Mercenaries gave me courage!
JudeSpeaking of great Mercenaries, that old Plushling showed up again. Said his name was Miguel...
CervantesWhat?! That old beanbag is still alive?!
JudeYou know, I thought I recognized his name when he told us...
JudeHe's Miguel, the Legendary swordsman, isn't he?
BardYou two were friends once, weren't you, Master Cervantes?
BardNot unlike Jude and young [Name 3] here! Working together to beat even the strongest of foes.
CervantesNot...exactly. He and I were bitter rivals.
BardOh, really? Well, I'm sure it was more of a friendly rivalry between two fellow Mercenaries.
CervantesEr... Let's move on, shall we?
JudeTo tell the truth, Master Cervantes, I was actually considering giving up being a Mercenary...
CervantesIs that so?
JudeIt was. But seeing [Name 3] fight so bravely reminded me of why I became a Mercenary...
Jude...And I figured that even the heroes from your Mercenary stories were scared sometimes...
JudeAnyway, I've decided to stick with it.
CervantesWell, of course you have! You are MY pupil, after all!
CervantesAnd who knows? You may just become a Legend in your own right!
JudeI don't know about that...
BardHa ha! Well, even that statement sounded a bit more confident than before!
CervantesDon't be too soft on the boy. He's got a long way to go yet!
CervantesHe should use young [Name 3] as an example. One can learn well by watching
CervantesSometimes a Mercenary has to be bold and take actions that seem reckless to others.
CervantesRemember that bravery and recklessness are two very different things. And go with bravery!
CervantesHeh heh. I must say, you're a lot like me when I was but a young whippersnapper.
BardHmm... Perhaps that's true...
CervantesGwahahaha!
CervantesAnyway, that's enough from me for now. There's nothing left for me to tell you!
JudeBut...Master Cervantes...?
BardHold on, Cervantes!
CervantesWhat is it? Ah yes! I completely forgot...
Cervantes[Name 3]! Let me evaluate your work today.
CervantesExcellent! You should be quite proud!
CervantesAnd I must say, it seems my instincts are still sharp as ever!
CervantesI can't fault your efforts today! I can happily certify you as a Fledgling Mercenary!
CervantesFrom now on, when you complete Mercenary quests, be sure to report back to me!
CervantesIf you earn enough Stars, your rank as a Mercenary might just increase!
Cervantes[Name 3]! Jude! Both of you should aim to become Reveria's greatest Mercenaries!

Cervantes...The great hero stood there frozen, a cold sweat covering his brow... BUT! Just as it looked like he had met his match, he lifted his head and let out a mighty battle roar! Indeed, the field of battle is a strange place, for now his foe was gripped with fear, while he... ...Hold on. Are you even listening,
CervantesStill not sure where you're going, eh? Well, Giles's farm is down in South Castele.
BardAh, a new, young Mercenary! You'd best speak to that older chap over there.
BardSomehow I doubt Jude has figured out how to swing his greatsword yet...
BardI'd appreciate it if you'd look out for my boy.
BardHave you sorted things out at the farm? Giles's place is over in South Castele.
BardSo it was some Carrottys causing the trouble all along! You did well, especially for your first job!
BardA Razorbeak is more dangerous than some pesky Carrottys, but I'm sure you'll be fine, [Name 1].
BardYou managed to beat that Razorbeak already? Great job!
JudeYou can't break stone with a sword... It's impossible!
JudeThe one thing I do know a lot about is monsters.
JudeYeesh. A Razorbeak... That's a big deal!
JudeWhat?! You defeated the Razorbeak?!
GilesThar's been a lot o' trouble on the fields of late. I'll be keepin' a better watch!

GilesYa went and beat that Razorbeak? Well, I never! Yer quite the Mercenary!

MiguelGreatswords may be heavy, but you can use them to attack many enemies at once.
MiguelYou can beat it. Just remember: be at one with your blade when you swing.
Miguel[Player]! Come find me in Al Maajik once you've honed your skills.

ReggieThe Proving Stone is great for training, but we could use your help around the farms too.
ReggieThanks for taking care of those beasts. Now we can farm in peace again!

CervantesHmph! All right, all right.
CervantesWell, even if you don't need an explanation, there's one thing I must tell any Mercenary.
CervantesSo listen up!
CervantesIn battle, you can only really rely on yourself.
CervantesA Mercenary needs two assets: a good blade and a strong arm.
CervantesBut that's not all there is to it.
CervantesA Mercenary must always see a quest through to the end.
CervantesYou must laugh in the face of danger and throw fear to the wind.
CervantesIt matters not how fearsome your foe.
CervantesEveryone has to face fear sometimes, but it is in those moments that you must stand, sword in hand...
BardHere he goes again...
BardHe can be a real pain. Guess you're getting that explanation you didn't ask for!
Cervantes...Battered armor, dented from attack after relentless attack...
Cervanteshis body heavy, weighed down by fatigue. He had only the strength for one final assault...
Bard*ahem* Cervantes?
BardPerhaps you'd better leave it there. You don't want to scare the poor

CervantesAnd here's that Fledgling License you're after.
BardCongratulations! He finally gave you your license!
BardI'll tell all the other Mercenaries I know that there's a new youngster in the ranks.
BardThey'll treat you just as if you'd completed the training.
CervantesYou must hone your skills and strive to understand the ways of battle.
CervantesWith that blade in hand, explore the world and test your mettle against mighty foes!
