The Fledgling Mercenary Fightin' Furious

Waaah! I can't do it! They're just too scary...
Waaaaah! Oh! Whew!
I thought you were my father... Don't scare me like that!
Huh? Yeah, I'm supposed to be investigating some reports of monster trouble at Giles's farm.
Say, you look like a Mercenary too. Wait. Did my father tell you to find me? He did, didn't he?!
I dreamed of becoming a Merc my entire Life. But it's a lot more scary...er...difficult than I realized.
My father's been telling me epic Mercenary stories since I was a little kid.
And Master Cervantes... You get him going, and he'll tell you Merc tales for hours.
I think I've heard all of his stories—Legendary Mercs, blades swinging, fighting fearsome beasts...
adventures through forests, over deserts, across the ocean—even to islands in the sky!
I'm sure he made some of it up, of course. But I always hung on every word.
I've wanted to be a hero since the very first story.
*sigh*
Master Cervantes doesn't expect you to get your greatsword training from me, does he?
Uh-oh. He must think I've already mastered the techniques.
But these things are so heavy! I can barely lift a greatsword, let alone swing one.
I do have an idea, though. I know a place where...
Hey, what was your name again?
[Name 1]?
All right, then, [Name 1], let's head out!
I think I know a spot in West Castele where we can train!
Here we go. We call this the Proving Stone. Many Mercenaries have used it to sharpen their skills.
Cervantes once told me if you can break a stone like this with your blade...
you have the makings of a great Mercenary. Only...
it seems impossible, doesn't it?
He did say there's some kind of secret to it...
Maybe you just hold your sword out and go... HYAAAA! Right? That should work.
HYAAAA! .........
Huh. Why didn't that work? My "HYAAAA" was pure gold!
I mean, sure, I was too worried about hurting my hands to actually SWING my sword, but...
Aw, who am I kidding? I'll never be a real Mercenary!
I can't believe Master Cervantes wants ME to teach YOU about swinging a sword.
Whaaat? Who are you?
You know about this stone?
N-not really...
What? You broke it?! Th...that's incredible!
Huh? He's gone. Just like that.
Who in the world was that old Plushling?
Well, anyway... I can't believe you actually broke that stone!
Hey! I bet you'd be great in a fight! You should help me sort things out at the farm!
I'm pretty sure my father and Master Cervantes want you to help me...
Good thing, since I'm not too great on my own. I took the job, but now I'm not sure I'm up to it...
But I bet we'll be fine if we go together. C'mon, [Player]! Let's get over to Giles's farm!
Th-th-they're coming!
...Wait. It's just a Carrotty?
They're Carrots that have somehow mutated and come to Life. They're nothing but little pranksters!
Shoot, even I could handle one of these guys...
Waah! More of 'em!
That's too m-m-many! I c-c-can't d-d-do it!
[Name 1]! You've got this, right?
Yeah, you've got this. You've already got this whole greatsword thing figured out...
I'll go stand in a safe spot over there and...er...give you tactical advice!
I'm sure you'll be fine, [Name 1]. They're no match for a stone-cold stone breaker!
You did it! You're something else, [Player]!
So, Giles... I take it that solves your problem for you?
All right! Let's go tell Master Cervantes we've finished the job!
Well...an old Plushling showed us the trick to doing it.
Yeah. He sure seemed to know a lot about greatswords. Is he a friend of yours?
Um...no problem. But didn't you say something was "awful"?
D-dangerous?
D-don't look at me! I can't do it!
It's too dangerous, Master Cervantes!
This isn't just a buncha bratty Carrots! This is a dangerous beast!
N-now? Umm...I guess...f-f-fear?
Hey!
Waaaait!
[Name 1]! Let me help you!
Th-that's the beast we're facing? M-maybe I'm not ready after all...
No! I AM a Mercenary! I WILL fight! I'm not hiding this time, [Name 1]!
I'm g-going to f-f-f-fight!
Waaah! It heard me!
D-d-did we win? I had my eyes shut mostly...
You know Master Cervantes?
Well, I was still scared, but thinking of all those tales of great Mercenaries gave me courage!
Speaking of great Mercenaries, that old Plushling showed up again. Said his name was Miguel...
You know, I thought I recognized his name when he told us...
He's Miguel, the Legendary swordsman, isn't he?
To tell the truth, Master Cervantes, I was actually considering giving up being a Mercenary...
It was. But seeing [Name 3] fight so bravely reminded me of why I became a Mercenary...
...And I figured that even the heroes from your Mercenary stories were scared sometimes...
Anyway, I've decided to stick with it.
I don't know about that...
But...Master Cervantes...?
You can't break stone with a sword... It's impossible!
The one thing I do know a lot about is monsters.
Yeesh. A Razorbeak... That's a big deal!
What?! You defeated the Razorbeak?!

Jude

I used to think maybe I should become a Paladin instead, but I'm glad I decided to be a Mercenary. After all, we have lots more freedom. And best of all, we don't have to worry about how we talk to people!
Lunares still has a certain charm in the daytime, but I think it looks much better at night. Its pallid glow is perfect for an understated Mercenary like me!
It's good to know there's another Mercenary I can count on to help me...I mean...to help people out. If you ever need a hand, I'll be right behind you, cheering you on... ...Well, I might be WAY behind you...but I'll cheer really hard!
Being a Mercenary is so cool, don't you think?
I've got some information that might be interesting for a Fledgling like you. I've heard reports of a huge monster wandering the Grassy Plains! An enormous...monstrous...C...C... Carrotella! Cervantes just laughed and told me to go and deal with it, but there's no way I can face that! The Carrotella is a gigantic Carrotty...like...probably 10 bowls worth of soup! Terrifying, right?

I hear you became an Apprentice! Congratulations! Hmm? Me? Uhh...no need to worry about me! I'm just taking things at my own pace. But I hear there's another nasty veggie on the loose! This time it's a giant Radishy...I mean...a Radishella! Yeah, we should probably just call it a Giant Radishy. But that wouldn't be any fun.
The Radishella was spotted in the northern part of the West Grassy Plains. Or was it the southern part? I doubt anyone's been able to defeat it yet, so you should get going. The early bird catches the worm! Me? Ha ha...don't worry about me. I'll...er...let you have this worm...

You're Adept ranked already? That's amazing! I'm... um...not quite there yet. Hey, how about you let me tag along with you? If I can keep from hiding, I'll totally help out! I should take some notes on your fighting style and try to figure out what makes you so brave...
Can I tag along with you? I wanna take some notes on your fighting style and see if I can figure out what makes you so brave!

Oh, hey! Don't mind me. I'm just feeling a bit down. I still haven't beaten a Radishy yet. Not a Radishella. I mean the little ones. I just...I can't do it! All I want is to be as good as you, but no matter how hard I try, you just get further and further ahead!
When I was little, I always wanted to grow up to be just like my dad. As I got older, I started to look up to Santos, the captain of Port Puerto's guards. Now... Well, I think I'll keep that a secret!

Congratulations on becoming a Master! Here. I'd like to give you this to mark your achievement. And to thank you for all your help.
But I'm a bit sad too. I think of you as a buddy... But now you're like Mercenary royalty or something! I hope this doesn't change our friendship.

What? You're a Hero now?! You might be stronger than Cervantes! Hee hee! Your days as a Novice seem like a long time ago now! You've become so much stronger since then. And cooler too! But me... I don't know... Have I changed at all? Maybe I've become a bit stronger... But definitely nothing compared to you!
...
...
Congratulations! I suppose I should call you the Legendary [Player] now, right? Hee hee. I always knew you'd make it! You really are a great Mercenary! It might seem a bit strange for me to say this, but how about trying out another Life? You can leave the Mercenary work to the rest of us for a while! I'll do my best to fill your shoes. Well...I might not fill 'em the way you fill 'em. But I feel like I should give it a shot. So hand 'em over! Just kidding! Keep your shoes. I'll try to get along without 'em!
You can leave the Mercenary work to me for a while if you want. Don't worry. I've been taking notes on your fighting technique, and I think I've picked up some good tips. It's my turn to help people out now! I'll show those monsters who's boss!

Hmm? What is it? You look remarkably cheery. Did something really good happen?
Let me guess—you're on a mission. Ha! What else is new? It's fun hearing about your progress. You're really an inspiration! In fact, I've been working out! Don't I look a lot stronger now? Maybe not as strong as you, but I'm getting there!

You reached Creator rank? Wow! Congratulations! To be honest, Creator rank is really just one big mystery to me. But I can tell from everyone else's reactions that it must be something really amazing. Actually...I have a little surprise of my own... Here. This is for you. I collected it myself!
Everyone keeps talking about how you made it to Creator rank. It's a big deal! Master Cervantes, my dad... Even Miguel was thrilled. That old Plushling can really move when he wants to. He leaped about five feet in the air when he heard! Well, that's what Cervantes said, anyway.
