The Fledgling Mercenary 109
Well, well. Who do we have here?
Another starry-eyed kid dreaming of becoming a Mercenary, eh? You've got guts, ←*
But I must say...the Mercenary Life is difficult.
You must be ready to fight tooth and nail against fearsome beasts! Do you think you're up for that?
I hope you know what you're getting into! You need keen senses and a quick reaction time in battle!
A Mercenary depends on sharp swords and strong arms, you know.
But there's a lot more to it than that!
Mercenaries always see their quests through to the end.
They laugh in the face of danger and throw caution to the wind!
You must stay in the fight, no matter how big or how fearsome your enemy is!
Even if that enemy is an enormous, scaly, fire-breathing dragon!
Why, a true Mercenary stands tall, blade in hand, gallantly facing down all foes.
Even the strongest of monsters are no match!
Did I mention the sharp swords? Yes, I think I did. It's worth repeating, though.
And, of course, a Mercenary carries no shield other than an abundance of confidence.
If you're still set on taking up this Life after hearing everything I just told you...
you might just have the grit to become truly great.
Perhaps I should regale you with a few tales of Legendary Mercenaries from times past...
Hmm?
Hrmph. I was just getting to the best stuff...
Oh well. It's my job to train new Mercs, not frighten 'em off.
So I'll give you the chance to be my trainee. But first you'll need something no Mercenary can do without.
We'll call it a gift—a present from me to start you on the road to becoming a mighty Hero!
True strength lies in honing your own skills. Without training, even the greatest talent withers.
With that blade in hand, you'll explore the world and test your mettle against the mightiest of foes!
Gahahaha! I kid, I kid.
Let's not get ahead of ourselves. We'll start off with something a little less...grand in scale.
Don't get me wrong! We'll find a good test for you— quelling some local disturbance or something.
Perhaps the fine chap behind the counter over there has some work for you.
Indeed!
Seems you've picked up a pearl of wisdom or two from my many tales, Bard!
Excellent idea!
You can learn some basics of swordplay from young Jude while you're at it!
That greatsword I gave you is big and heavy. Wielding it is all about grip, you know.
That is to say, the best swordsperson isn't necessarily the strongest...
Well, well! Back from your first job! And you broke the Proving Stone? Impressive!
...An old Plushling, you say?
Hmm... I wonder if it was him...
Is that so?
Now hold on, Giles.
Well, I guess this task falls to you, [Name 2]!
To be given such a challenge on your first day as a Mercenary... That's quite an unusual honor.
Ah, but this young ←2
Listen up, [Name 2]!
Sometimes a Mercenary has to put aside thoughts of personal safety.
When vicious monsters are on the loose...well, this is just what we do!
We Mercenaries train every day preparing to face such foes.
But let me ask you this: What is a Mercenary's greatest enemy?
Uh...good guess. But no.
You in particular should be quite familiar with the answer, Jude.
What are you feeling right now, lad?
That...is the correct answer!
[Name 2], you still haven't tasted true fear.
That makes you perfect for this task.
Will you stand tall and face your foe? Or will you fall into the depths of fear, sniveling all the way?
Toss 'em into the fray! I've always thought that was the best way to train young Mercs.
I'm like a mother eagle pushing her young out of the nest. That's how I must send you on your way!
But I won't just shove you out into the wild with no guidance. I've a special technique to teach you.
Now, [Name 2], take your blade and carve your way through this adventure!
Ah, you're back!
You don't have to say a word. I can tell how it went just by looking at you!
What?! That old beanbag is still alive?!
Not...exactly. He and I were bitter rivals.
Er... Let's move on, shall we?
Well, of course you have! You are MY pupil, after all!
And who knows? You may just become a Legend in your own right!
Don't be too soft on the boy. He's got a long way to go yet!
He should use young [Name 3] as an example. One can learn well by watching ←(
Sometimes a Mercenary has to be bold and take actions that seem reckless to others.
Remember that bravery and recklessness are two very different things. And go with bravery!
Heh heh. I must say, you're a lot like me when I was but a young whippersnapper.
Gwahahaha!
Anyway, that's enough from me for now. There's nothing left for me to tell you!
What is it? Ah yes! I completely forgot...
[Name 3]! Let me evaluate your work today.
Excellent! You should be quite proud!
And I must say, it seems my instincts are still sharp as ever!
I can't fault your efforts today! I can happily certify you as a Fledgling Mercenary!
From now on, when you complete Mercenary quests, be sure to report back to me!
If you earn enough Stars, your rank as a Mercenary might just increase!
[Name 3]! Jude! Both of you should aim to become Reveria's greatest Mercenaries!
Carrottys can be challenging when they run amok. But a Razorbeak is much worse.
You haven't got time to be loafing around here, [Name 2]!
What? You've forgotten the skill I taught you already?!
That's simply outrageous! I guess I'll have to drill it into you again!
Maybe you'd better start off by helping the locals. Have a chat with Bard over there.
...The great hero stood there frozen, a cold sweat covering his brow... BUT! Just as it looked like he had met his match, he lifted his head and let out a mighty battle roar! Indeed, the field of battle is a strange place, for now his foe was gripped with fear, while he... ...Hold on. Are you even listening, ←*
Still not sure where you're going, eh? Well, Giles's farm is down in South Castele.
...What? You don't need any instruction?
Hmph! Hold on, ←*
I see...
Hmph! Don't make fun of your elders. Anyway, I guess I'll tell you the rest.
Hmph! All right, all right.
Well, even if you don't need an explanation, there's one thing I must tell any Mercenary.
So listen up!
In battle, you can only really rely on yourself.
A Mercenary needs two assets: a good blade and a strong arm.
But that's not all there is to it.
A Mercenary must always see a quest through to the end.
You must laugh in the face of danger and throw fear to the wind.
It matters not how fearsome your foe.
Everyone has to face fear sometimes, but it is in those moments that you must stand, sword in hand...
...Battered armor, dented from attack after relentless attack...
his body heavy, weighed down by fatigue. He had only the strength for one final assault...
Hrmph. I was just getting to the best bit...
Well, anyway, that's what it takes to be a Mercenary. Here. This is for you.
And here's that Fledgling License you're after.
You must hone your skills and strive to understand the ways of battle.
With that blade in hand, explore the world and test your mettle against mighty foes!
The Mercenary's Tale 2
Today is a turning point in your long and winding road through Life. It calls for celebration! The most important task for you today, ←*
You've done well to come so far. But there's still a long road left to tread. Always remember: a Mercenary never gives in!

Oh well. It's my job to train new Mercs, not scare 'em away.
So I'll give you the chance to be my assistant. But first...something to identify you as a Mercenary!

I shall entrust this task to my new pupil, [Name 2]!
Never fear! Any assistant of mine is equal to the task. I don't train just anyone, you know.

Be at one with your sword...then swing! Now go!
See! Didn't I say ←(
Miguel?! What did that old beanbag want?
I had no idea the old fool was still kicking.
Hmph. He and I were once bitter competitors.
Hmm. Let's move on, shall we?
The most important thing today is that this young ←*
That is the key to becoming a truly great Mercenary.
In fact...you remind me of myself when I was but a young whippersnapper.

Chat 52
Be it GIANT lizards, or HUGE, razor-fanged beasts, or perhaps slimy, slithering, stinking monstrosities... we Mercenaries face them down, while those of another Life may flee, chased by fear's icy tendrils. Even if we are gripped by trepidation, drenched in a cold sweat, we laugh in the face of danger and fight!
I shall explain to you in simple terms the difference between a Paladin and a Mercenary. If a Paladin could be likened to a Potato salad, then a Mercenary could be compared to...well...um... Ah, perhaps that is a bad example. Allow me to try again. If a Mercenary is like the hard heel of a shoe, a Paladin would be more akin to...erm... Well, anyway, I'm sure you understand. Let us raise a toast to Lunares above us!
As a Mercenary, you must always continue to fight bravely when others may falter. And never underestimate the importance of thorough preparations. If you're unprepared on the battlefield, you'll be sliced into dragon chow before you can do a thing!
Never underestimate the importance of thorough preparations. If you're unprepared on the battlefield, you'll be dragon chow before you can say...well, anything.
We Mercenaries take on tough enemies that those from another Life might dare not face. Huge reptiles, gargantuan beasts, monolithic dinosaurs. Are you quaking with fear yet, young'un?
Huge reptiles, gargantuan beasts, monolithic dinos. Those are just some foes we Mercenaries must face. Ah, I just remembered! I never did tell you about the incident at the farm! There is an old, touching story of a young farm maid who saved a Mercenary collapsed on the road. That is why we always make sure to help the farmers when Carrottys or other troublemakers pop up.
Ah! So you're now an Apprentice, eh, young'un? You're doing well, I must admit. How about using the Shockwave technique? It takes a fair amount of SP, but any enemies before you will be sent flying by its raw power! If you ever find yourself facing a group of enemies, it could be just the skill you need to make it through!
If you can use Shockwave effectively, you're on the road to becoming quite the Mercenary.
Oho! So you're an Adept now, eh, young'un? In that case, I suppose it's about time you headed out for some tougher training. There's a place for Mercenaries to train over in Al Maajik. An old acquaintance of mine runs the place, but it seems he doesn't get many students these days. Some say it's because the world is at peace and so his skills aren't needed. But they're wrong! It's because there are fewer and fewer brave souls willing to look danger in the eye and fight! Instead, the world is full of people who would rather cower at home than defeat the enemies of peace. It truly is a sorry state of affairs. If they aren't going to face down their foes, then where are they going to direct their frustration?
The place I told you about is run by an old Plushling named Miguel. Indeed, he's the same Miguel you met when you were but a Novice. Nowadays, I've heard he lives a cushy retired Life with his granddaughter waiting on him. Hmph!
Ah, have you come for more of my glorious tales? Well, all right. Just don't go telling everyone. Back in my youth, I was the one who brought the great Lord of the Dead to its knees. Believe it or not, that was when I was but a Fledgling. The beast and I exchanged blows for 15 long hours. Neither of us would give an inch, nor could either of us force the other to give in. I drew on what little SP I had remaining and went to let loose with one final Heavy Swing. Right then, the great Lord of the Dead cried out. It begged for mercy from my blade, even claiming that a real man would settle matters with his fists! But I paid it no heed, and with steely determination I instead prepared for a Super Shockwave attack. It was at that moment that the great beast collapsed, a cloud of sand erupting as it fell, its strength spent.
That oaf Miguel told me dinosaurs can't talk! But that's not necessarily true. After all, if you spend 15 hours locked in battle with your enemy, you begin to understand one another. That is something a true Mercenary comprehends. Of course, Miguel knows that. I get the feeling he was merely having a laugh at my expense...
Oho! Excellent work! You've finally become a Master Mercenary! You're still not quite at my level, young'un, but I think you've now surpassed that old codger Miguel! Here. Take this as recognition of your achievements. Keep training. One day you may match my might!
There's still more for you to aim for, young'un! You can start by trying to reach my level, heh heh! But I suppose Miguel has some talent too. In truth, I owe him a debt, though I don't like to admit it. Ages ago, we were both famed dinosaur hunters. We both faced many dangers during our travels. During that time, I saved his Life on seven occasions, while he saved me eight times in all. As such, I owe him a Life debt, though I'm sure he's forgotten about it by now... But I must admit I am grateful to him for his aid.
You've become a Hero at last! I must say I'm impressed, if not surprised. But I'm afraid you'll have to train a little more if you want to reach my level, young'un! Heh heh! That said, I believe you may be able to continue my legacy. One foe I never got to defeat was the Shadowsaurus. It dwells in darkness. Are you up to the challenge?
The Shadowsaurus is a mighty foe for anyone. I suspect it will be the strongest enemy you have yet faced during your time as a Mercenary. As such, if you were to defeat it, or if you already HAVE defeated it, you would be... Well, you would be beyond strong. You would be of a level to which others could no longer compare. What lies beyond the pinnacle of ultimate strength, however... Even I cannot answer that riddle.
So you've finally made it, eh, young'un? You're a Legend now! I must say, I'm proud of you. But I would wager I am still the mightier of the two of us. Just by a smidgen, of course! Heh heh! You'll only equal me after years of training pupils. You must grow so old that you can't lift your blade! After all, if raw strength of arm were all that counts, you'd have been mightier than I from the day we met!
I grant that you are a mighty Mercenary, but I think you're still a little behind me. Heh heh!
I trust you are enjoying your Life as a Mercenary? Heh heh. Don't worry, young'un. You don't have to say a thing! I can see it in your eyes. Those with ambition always have a certain sharpness to their gaze. I see that in you. Here. I want you to take this.
Never forget, there is nothing you can't do! After all, you are the only Mercenary ever to have surpassed even my might!
Good to see you again, young'un. I know why you are here. You don't have to tell me. You've finally reached Creator rank, right? I offer you my deepest congratulations!
I don't know a great deal about this Creator rank of yours... What I do know is that it is time for a new generation to take up leadership among the Mercenaries. [Player]! I shall leave the future in your capable hands!
Looks like you've been busy, young'un! Let me take a look at your achievements.
Hmmm. I'm afraid you'll need to work harder than that! Come back when you've got more to show for yourself!
Congratulations, young'un. You've finally reached the Apprentice rank! You've a long way to go to be a world-renowned Mercenary like me, but keep on going!
Looks like you're ranked as an Adept now, young'un! Excellent! Congratulations! People around here are starting to talk about your exploits. I am eager to see what else you can do!
Congratulations, young'un. You should be proud to have made it to Expert rank. I don't hand that title to many of my pupils, you know! Now, get out there and stand tall in the face of your foes! Gah ha ha ha!
So you're a Master now, eh, young'un? Well, congratulations. All the warriors of the kingdom look up to you now. You're a fine example of a true Mercenary! Today is an important milestone in your Life as a Mercenary, you know. As such, I believe a celebration is in order! Enjoy yourself, young'un. That's your only challenge for today!
Congratulations, young'un! Looks like you've finally become a Hero! Today is truly a special day! To think that my pupil would come so far, even to have gained the trust of the king himself! And of course that makes you yet another Mercenary who outranks old Miguel, heh heh! Ah yes, I mustn't forget... King Erik sent word that he has a gift prepared to mark this great milestone. Go and receive it with pride! I never thought I'd see the day when one of my pupils would reach the rank of Hero. This is a proud day for me too!
Congratulations, young'un! You've reached Legend rank at last! There is nothing remaining for me to teach you. It's strange... I am delighted, but at the same time, part of me is sad that I can no longer instruct you. You should also inform King Erik of this marvelous and momentous achievement. There's a chance he has something of great value to pass down to you. Be proud of your achievements today, young'un. You have accomplished much to become a Legend!
I see you're still but a young Fledgling. You've a long way to go yet, young'un! Heh heh!
Still just an Apprentice, young'un? Well, if you focus on the job at hand, progress will follow!
I see you've yet to progress beyond Adept rank. You're doing well, but never rest on your laurels!
So you're an Expert at last, eh, young'un? I have to say I'm thrilled you've made it so far.
So how does it feel to be a Master now? Well, you've earned it, young'un. Well done!
Did you talk to the king about that gift? If not, I'd advise that you do so! Go ahead and take what he has to offer. It is unbecoming for a Mercenary to act too humbly.
Have you had a chat with King Erik? If not, hurry up and do it! Apparently he has something to give you. And once you have it, make sure you go and show it off to old Miguel! Heh heh! That ought to rile him right up!
Ah, good to see you, [Player]! Have you been honing your skills properly? Anyway, what are you here for today? [Choice: Report / Chat / Just saying hi!]
Heh heh! How about raising a glass of good ol' Barley Juice together? No? Well then, what do you want?! [Choice: Report / Chat / Er...nothing!]
You've given up being a Mercenary, eh, young'un? In that case, you'll have to report to another Master.
Hmmm. Hmmmmmm... Ah, [Player]! Perhaps... Perhaps you might be able to help me. I have been informed that a dinosaur made of naught but bones has appeared in the Aridian Desert. I fear it may be the cursed monster of the desert known simply as the Lord of the Cursed. The beast was created when a Lord of the Dead, servant to the Dark Sultan, lost its master. For years it lay awaiting its next order, but it never came, and the beast became nothing but bones. In Al Maajik, it is feared as a symbol of impending misfortune, but I'm afraid that is a misunderstanding. In truth, all the beast desires is a friend. Just a friend to play with. Simple as that. How do I know, you ask? I know because I am a friend to the creature. I used to visit it when I was young, but at my present age it is rather difficult to manage. Which is where I'd like you to help. Would you be willing to play with him for me? However, while I say it's just playing...the beast is incredibly strong. Your Life will be on the line... As such, this is dangerous work. I can't ask anyone less than a Creator-rank Mercenary such as yourself. If you're willing to play on those terms, just talk to me again. Unless...you've already met this beast!
Good to see you, [Player]. What are you after today? [Choice: Special Request / Chat / Just saying hi!]
Oho! So you'll play with the old beast, eh? [Choice: Yeah! / ,,I don't like playing]
Oho, you will! Excellent! The Lord of the Cursed will be waiting for a strong playmate after nightfall in the Aridian Desert. Show the beast who's boss, and bring back a [Name 2]. It might just be play, but if you're not on your toes, it'll be game over for you! ...And there's one more thing. I'd also like to go and see my old friend again. If you could, would you take me along with you?
Ah, I see... Well, I guess he'll just have to stay lonely for a while longer. Let me know if you change your mind.
...That horn! Is that... a [Name 2]?! I just asked for that as a joke—an incentive, if you will. I never thought you'd actually bring it back! You truly have become a mighty warrior. You are a Mercenary all others should look up to! The top Mercenary in all of Reveria!
Hmm. Now what can I give you in thanks... Ah yes! How would these do? Someone gave them to me a long time ago, as a good luck charm. Here's hoping your future is blessed with happiness!
Well then, if you feel like playing with the Lord of the Cursed again, just let me know! You're a friend to the both of us now. I can call him back anytime you like.
The Lord of the Cursed will be waiting for a strong playmate after nightfall in the Aridian Desert. Show the beast who's boss, and bring back a [Name 2]!
What is it, young'un? Too tired to play with the old beast? [Choice: I'm exhausted! / I'm good to go!]
Well, I guess it's a temporary break in play! Take some time to rebuild your strength!
