The Fledgling Woodcutter 34
Hello! I'm here. Wherever "here" is. It certainly seems wetter than most places...
So! Uh, who summoned me? Anyone?
You know what? This doesn't seem quite right. Were two people trying to summon me at once?
What are YOU looking at? Never seen a supernatural being materialize in a fountain before?
Wait...that means you can see me! That's a good sign.
I'm not usually this clumsy—you've got to believe me.
So were you throwing coins in the fountain and wishing for someone special to appear?
Well, congratulations! I'm here to grant all your wishes and make your wildest dreams come true.
Ha! Totally kidding. Sorry. I suppose that was kind of mean.
Anyway, now that I've probably rubbed you the wrong way, I could use a li'l help getting out of here.
Ah, thank you!
What a day! I sure didn't expect to be rescued by a human when I woke up this morning.
Well, anyway, shall we get on with business? You're the Forest Protector, right?
What? You're just a Novice? How is it you can even see me?
Wait! Don't say anything!
I'm going to practice my mind-reading skill. Use it or lose it, you know?
How odd... I'm getting a really strong ham- sandwich vibe.
Oh. You're hungry. No wonder. Well, try to focus your thoughts, and let's try again!
Here we go. Ahh! You're looking for an Elder Log, am I right?
And let me guess...you want to find it all by yourself. To prove you're a worthy Woodcutter, right?
Well, that's pretty ambitious for a Novice. But if you're willing to accept a little assistance...
I think I can point you in the right direction! After all, I kind of owe you one.
Come on, I'll show you! You're one lucky Novice, you know that?
OK, look closely...
This majestic tree has lived for hundreds of years. If it were felled, it would produce Elder Logs.
Of course, only the most experienced Woodcutters are allowed to harvest such a tree.
Even LOOKING at a tree like this is special. Never forget that.
I've got to say, though, you're giving me a strong Forest Protector vibe...
You look a bit like him, you know? Or is it just that you don't look unlike him? Hmm...
Anyway, my work here is done.
There's one more person I need to speak with before returning to the Elderwood.
Of course, I still haven't figured out why exactly you're able to see me, even as a Novice...
Oh well. No point in dwelling on that. Good luck, [Player]!
Ciao!

Woodcutter, lost in the forest. Why are you grieving before this spring?
Did you drop a golden axe in here? Or a silver axe perhaps? Or...I dont know, a bronze one, maybe?
I've got tons in here. I don't know why this seems to be the popular spot for losing axes.
Oh, I see you've got one, though. Good. Whew! Well, that mystery is solved.
So what can I do for you while I try to conceal myself...*sigh* These urban springs are too small!
I mean, what sort of ehtereal entity can properly hide in here? You'd think it was just a water fountain...
Wait...is this actually just a...nevermind.
So! What can I do for you?
If you don't know, I'm the ://Lady of the Forest Spirits. As a Woodcutter, you've probably heard of me.
I do know a little about you, though...looking for some Elder Logs, eh?
I figured I'd spare you the embarrassment of just coming right out and asking...
But nothing is given, everything is earned here! How about a little exchange?
Take me to a place with a clear spring, would you?
Then I'll tell you where the Elder Logs are. It's a win-win situation for both of us!
Oh, isn't this nice!
Now THIS is a proper spring!
You're more competent than you look.
So I guess I owe you some info on Elder Logs, then. Perk up your ears!
There's what you humans would call an Great Tree over in the western part of Castele.
The forest energy runs strong over there. You'll need to have the strength and the skill...
but that's all on you! I've done my part.
I'm going to hang around in this forest for a while and then return to the Elderwood.
Say...your name was what? [Player]?
You remind me of someone I knew a long time ago...
Kinda an old acquaintance...
went ahead and became part of the forest...loved it so much, was willing to be cursed...
Lost the ability to cut wood. Shame...
Good luck!
I'm sure an eager Woodcutter like you has a fine future on the horizon...
Good luck, [Player]!
Ugh, it's so...loud here! I'd like a quieter spring, to be honest.
It's nice...but it's not a spring.

Hey! Did you summon me here? Wait. You're not a Woodcutter at the moment! How can you even see me? I really need to work on my supernatural hiding skills...
Psst. Hey, you. What do you think of Woodcutters? I happen to love them. Yeah, Woodcutters are really good people.
Hey there, Woodcutter. Good to see you again! It can get lonely when most people can't see you. So...here's a little something special for finding me. Come find me again sometime!
Oh, hey there. You caught me at kind of a bad time. Or...the perfect time, if you want to hear a rant! Almost every human that I encounter wants something! It's always "Forest Lady, help me!" or "Forest Lady, save me!" or "Forest Lady, give me a nice axe!" Don't they know I'm busy protecting the entire forest? Yeesh. Sorry. Rant over. Now, what did you want?
So you're still checking in with Heyho every so often, right? Tell me, how's he doing? Has he been able to forgive himself? Oh, wonderful! He's really been too hard on himself over the years.
Can you do me a favor? I have a message I want you to pass on to Heyho for me. Please tell him the forest spirits forgave him long ago. It's all needles under the pine. I think he thinks he's "cursed" or something. And he's totally not. The spirits just wanted to give him a little warning, and I'm afraid it went too far...
Hey, congratulations on earning the Master rank! What, you thought I wouldn't know? I'm all knowing! OK, maybe "ALL knowing" is a tiny stretch. I don't know how to cook, for example. But I know enough to say that you're the most promising young Woodcutter we've seen in years. You treat the forest well...and in return, it treats you well. It's simple, but some people can't seem to grasp the concept. Anyway, keep up the good work!
Hey there, Master. What's the latest? I'm kidding. I know everything there is to possibly know about trees and woodcutting. Sorry. I didn't mean to take the wind out of your sails like that. Uh, yeah. Small talk is kinda awkward when you're an all-knowing supernatural being...
You know what makes the forest spirits happy? To see logs being harvested for a noble purpose. From the handle of a magnificent axe...to the planks used in an exquisite piece of furniture... And that's why so many of the top Woodcutters also dabble in the Carpenter Life. When you understand how to craft with wood, you're more in tune with the raw materials. Anyway, it never hurts to try out a new Life or two. You won't lose any Woodcutter skills!
I have a question for you, Woodcutter. How do you feel about luck? It's tempting to think your accomplishments are all skill, and bad luck is, well, bad luck. But luck—pure, random chance—plays a role in everything, like it or not. The trick is to develop your luck like a skill! That's all I can say. Gotta keep some supernatural secrets.
You've been pretty lucky so far, you know? I don't mean to knock your accomplishments. You're doing a great job, and the forest is pleased. But...think back on some of your adventures. Did you feel a bit lucky at times? Well, just know the forest has your back. And keep those fingers crossed! Heh...
Say, is Heyho still telling that story about how I got stuck in the fountain that one time? Ugh. Materialize in the wrong spot ONE time, and you can never live it down... Well, at least he seems to have lightened up some if he can find the humor in that. Good for him.
Hey, I just wanted to tell you that no matter what the king says, you're a true Forest Protector to me. And that's what counts, you know. Seeing as I'm the Forest Lady and all!
Hey, Forest Protector. Here's an exercise for you to try. Go back to your home, turn off the lights, sit on the floor, and meditate. Tune out all sounds and distractions...and then listen for the whispers of the forest! They can still be heard in the floorboards and the furniture...the chest of drawers and the cabinet. It's just another way to remind yourself to always be respectful of Reveria's natural resources.
Howdy, Woodcutter! What's the latest? What?! You're trying to go beyond the Legend rank? How is that even possible? Why don't you stop what you're doing and try out another Life for a while? No...no, I'm not trying to discourage you. I'm just... trying to, uh, reverse encourage you a little bit...
So I understand you really want to reach the Creator rank. I get it. But...have you considered the fact that you are not a supernatural being? Have you even spent a hundred years as a tree? 'Cause I have! It's, uh, less fun than it sounds. Anyway, like I said earlier...maybe take a short vacation from being a Woodcutter. Why not?
I don't believe it. You've actually done it! You reached the Creator rank! I'm sorry for doubting you...and kinda, sorta actively sabotaging your efforts. By way of apology, please take this. It's the least I can do.
Did you accept my sincere apology? I'm actually glad you reached the Creator rank. Now that we're practically on the same level, we can talk shop. That could be kinda fun! So...what's up with all the disturbances in the Oak aura lately? Weird, right? And have you noticed how bad traffic has been on the astral plane? It's like they'll let ANYONE become a divine being these days. Sheesh!
