The Fledgling Woodcutter

Legendary Lumber, Jack!

Heyho has tasked you with a Woodcutter challenge! Complete the challenge to receive your license! Tiiimberrr!

Script (396 lines)

HeyhoHuh? Who are you? Another Woodcutter wannabe?
HeyhoWell, I'd say you've come to the right place...but that wouldn't be entirely accurate.
HeyhoStick around long enough and you'll see what I mean.
HeyhoAnyway, it's true that our services are in high demand here in Reveria.
HeyhoFrom Barrels to bows, you can't build much without quality timber.
HeyhoTruth be told, the kingdom could use another GREAT Woodcutter, because I sure ain't cuttin' it.
HeyhoWhy? Well...it really boils down to one thing.
HeyhoI'm pretty much the worst Woodcutter in the world. That's why.
HeyhoMaybe I shouldn't have told you that. I suppose it's not exactly confidence inspiring.
HeyhoLet me make it up to you. Take this. It should help you get started.
HeyhoAnd I can do you one better. Go talk to a guy named Forrest out in the eastern woods.
HeyhoHe's the teacher you deserve...and kind of the unofficial Woodcutter Master right now.

MonikaOh, hey! Are you the aspiring Woodcutter we heard about?
MonikaGreat! All right, take it away, Forrest!
ForrestAch, here goes!
Forrest♪ Grab yer axe and get tae choppin'... The forest calls, ye best be hoppin'!
Forrest♪ It's logs an' timber all day long... So swing that axe an' sing along!
Forrest*cough* Ach, I wasnae warmed up. Let's give her another go...
Forrest♪ Yer axe rings out so sweet and true... The birdies stop their song fer you!
Forrest♪ When lunchtime comes, we take a break... It's time tae eat a pound o' Steak!
ForrestThat's just a wee ditty I sing myself tae pass the time.
ForrestSee, cuttin's a mite easier when ye got some rhythm, aye, mate?
ForrestAnyhoo, that'll fix ye fer learnin'. Off ye go.
MonikaForrest! I...I don't think that's going to cut it...so to speak.
MonikaYou have to actually TEACH people how to cut the wood, remember? Not just sing about it?
MonikaSometimes I wish I'd chosen another discipline. The other Masters actually instruct their pupils.
MonikaHow is it you have so much energy to cut trees and so little to devote to anything else?
ForrestAch, lassie! I get it. Ye dinnae need ta lecture nae further.
ForrestTae be honest, ah'm no Master Woodcutter.
MonikaOh! I didn't mean that...
MonikaAnd look, we've been ignoring this poor Novice. Sorry!
MonikaMy dad sent you here to speak with Forrest, right?
MonikaGood! Well, it's nice to meet you, [Name 1].
MonikaAs you might have gathered, this is Forrest, one of the most talented Woodcutters in Reveria.
MonikaAnd I'm Monika, a Novice Woodcutter.
MonikaI help Forrest out with various tasks, and he's teaching me the trade. Kind of.
Forrest♪ The Novice 'Cutter is soft and weak... One couldnae chop through a hankychief!
Forrest♪ But when yer arms grow strong as wood... That's when ye earn yer livelihood!
MonikaCome on, Forrest! Now's not the time.
MonikaI think [Name 1] would really like to learn how to swing an axe today.
ForrestAye, ye have a point, lassie. Very well, [Name 1]. Let's get tae swingin', shall we?

ForrestAye, that's a dead pure grip. Now ye just need tae learn the swingin' piece.
ForrestI'll show ye how it's done. Ye dinnae need tae press any buttons just yet.

MonikaWell! Look who can teach up a storm when he wants to.

ForrestAll righty, young [Name 1]. Ah've got a challenge fer ya.
ForrestThis here forest is right burstin' with juicy Oak Trees.
ForrestAn' whit I want ye tae do is cut 'em straight down an' bring me the Oak Logs, ye unnerstan'?
ForrestIf ye run outta trees tae cut, come an' let me know. I'll run ye on another erran'.
MonikaGood luck, [Name 1]. I've got some errands, so I'll catch up with you later.
ForrestPoor lassie. She's Heyho's daughter, so she's got the Woodcuttin' blood, but she's a mite feeble.
ForrestBut she insists on helpin' me 'round here with the woodcuttin' chores, so I cannae say no.
ForrestI suspect she feels badly 'bout her pa steppin' down.
ForrestAch, enough about that.

ForrestCrivvens, that was a pure crackin' swing if I've e'er heard one!
ForrestAn' now ye got a heap o' logs all tae yerself. With the blessin' o' the forest spirits, that is.
MonikaYeah...so Forrest sometimes talks about "forest spirits." We're not sure what he means.
MonikaI mean, nobody I know has ever seen one.
ForrestAch, ye know not of what ye speak. The spirits only talk tae friends o' the forest.
MonikaWhat?! Are you saying I'm not a friend of the forest?
ForrestNaw, it's just that ye and [Player] are still young'uns. Be patient, lassie.
ForrestI'm a friend tae the spirits, an' even I've never laid eyes on the Forest Lady. She's the real forest boss.
ForrestFunny, that. The more I learn o' the forest, the more I find I'm still a wee student meself.
MonikaOh yes, well, of course the Forest Lady is real. But only the Forest Protector can summon her, right?
ForrestI cannae say fer sure how tae summon her.
ForrestBut enough yakkin'. [Player] here has got heaps o' stuff tae do.
ForrestLike make

MonikaAw, it was nothing. Don't mention it.
MonikaAnyway, I've come to introduce you to our newest Novice Woodcutter. Say hello to [Name 1]!
Inn MasterHey there, kid. I'm looking forward to doing business with you.
Inn MasterHeyho is your Master, right? Monika's father?
MonikaWell, technically...but it's Forrest who's really doing the teaching.
Inn MasterIs that so? Well, he's a genius with his axe, that's for sure.
Inn MasterAnd it looks like he's got you off to a good start! Those are fresh Oak Logs I smell, aren't they?
MonikaYep, you're right, as always. These fell to [Name 1]. Not bad for a first assignment!
MonikaWe've got three of them for you today, straight from the woods.
(no English text)
Inn MasterWell, they look great. Stout and cleanly cut, just like I like 'em. These will be easy to work with.
Inn MasterHere's what I can offer you for 'em.
MonikaGreat. Thanks!
MonikaWell, how does it feel to make your first sale as an official Woodcutter, [Name 1]?
Inn MasterHey, look who's here!
Inn MasterIt's Forrest! Rare to see him outside the woods.
Inn MasterI wonder what he's doing here. Maybe he's got some business with the Carpenters.
MonikaHey, let's go tell him how the sale went. He'll probably sing you a song...
MonikaWe're off! Thanks again, and see you later.
Inn MasterAlways a pleasure. Come again!
Inn MasterI look forward to buying more logs felled by your axe, [Name 1]!
MonikaC'mon. I'll show you where the carpentry workshop is.

ForrestAch, I'd love tae help ye, but I cannae do it.
MinisterPlease, there's got to be a way!
MonikaHe's talking to someone from the castle. Maybe we shouldn't interrupt.
ForrestI'm tellin' ye, ye cannae just walk doon the forest path an' find an Elder Log.
ForrestThey're rarer than snowflakes in summer, mate. Could take years tae find one.
MinisterBut...you're our only hope. And the Carpenters assure me there is no substitute.
ForrestAye, that's true. Top-class materials make for top-class furniture, no doubt.
MinisterAlas, we have not found a single merchant with any in stock.
ForrestAn' ye never will. Logs like that don't exactly...grow on trees. Er...ye get my meanin'.
MinisterYes, of course. That's precisely why we've turned to you!
MinisterYou're known as the finest Woodcutter in Reveria. Surely YOU can track down a single Elder Log!
ForrestLook, mate. If I could do it fer ye, I would. I'd run out tae the forest straightaway.
ForrestBut I am no' the Forest Protector. An' he's the only one who knows how tae find 'em.
MinisterPlease, Mr. Forrest, on behalf of Castele Castle, I beg you!
ForrestPal, have ye had yer hearin' checked lately?
MonikaMaybe we should go rescue Forrest from this conversation...

ForrestMonika! [Name 1]! I'm pleased tae see ye both at this particular moment. How'd it go?
MonikaPerfectly well. We got a good price for the logs.
MonikaBut what's all this about you getting an Elder Log? That's a crazy request!
ForrestAye, yer not wrong. I'd love tae help him oot, but the man dinnae know what he's askin'.
MonikaRight! Isn't finding a log like that simply a matter of luck?
MonikaMy dad told me that some Woodcutters go their whole careers without finding a single one.
MonikaThe odds of finding one randomly are like...one in a million!
ForrestMath isnae my strong point, lassie, but I reckon that's about right.
ForrestNow, if ye could have a wee chat with the Forest Lady, ye might have better luck...
ForrestBut she's not knoon fer hangin' around these parts. [Name 1] is as likely tae meet her as anyone.
ForrestWhich is tae say...not very. N'fact, only one fella I know has ever met her. Er...I shouldnae said that...
MonikaIt's my dad, isn't it?
ForrestYer old man was once knoon as the Forest Protector. Course, times have changed a wee bit...
MonikaBut now Dad is...well...
MonikaHe's certainly not cutting much wood, that's for sure.
ForrestAye. I dinnae want tae worry ye, but...
ForrestHeyho spends most evenings cuttin' down pints o' Barley Juice at the Crown.
ForrestAn' without him, findin' an Elder Log anytime soon seems a wee stretch, if ye ask me.
ForrestBut ye should seek him oot just the same. If anyone can find an Elder Log, it's him.

HeyhoWhat?! They want an Elder Log?
HeyhoGah! It's like they haven't learned anything. That's a fool's errand!
HeyhoLook, it's basically impossible.
HeyhoEspecially for a Novice like yourself.
HeyhoAnd yet...you don't even seem discouraged. What's the opposite of that feeling? Hopeful?
HeyhoYes, hopeful! That's it. It's been so long since I've felt that way. I'm almost inspired.
HeyhoYou actually remind me a little bit of myself. Let's hope your story has a happier ending.
HeyhoCourse, I still think you're going to fail, but...
HeyhoIt looks like you won't give up no matter what I say, so I might as well try to help you.
HeyhoThis won't involve me putting an axe in my hand— those days are done. But there's one thing I can try.
HeyhoThis might seem odd, but I need you to shut your eyes and cover your ears, [Player].
HeyhoThat goes for everyone in here! I'm about to perform an ancient ritual...
HeyhoO Forest Lady...hear my voice. I will now begin the ancient chant. *ahem*
Heyho♪ CHOPPY CHOPPY HAPPY TREE! LET THE SPIRIT COME TO ME!
HeyhoHear me, O Forest Lady. It is I, Heyho the cursed.
HeyhoI...uh. Well, frankly I didn't think I'd ever call you like this again. But here we are.
HeyhoA young Woodcutter with the heart of an Elder has moved me...as unlikely as that seems.
HeyhoSo please, wherever you are, drop what you're doing and lend us a hand!
HeyhoWhat? What happened? Did the Forest Lady appear?
Young ManOh! Sorry, no. I just dropped a glass, and it shattered on the floor. Sorry for the distraction.
HeyhoWell, I suppose that makes it official...
HeyhoI'm no longer the Forest Protector.
HeyhoI should have known it wouldn't work.
HeyhoI haven't set foot in the forest in years. I spend more time with a glass in my hand than an axe.
HeyhoWhat did I expect? Ah well. There's a lesson here, [Player]. Don't follow in my footsteps.
HeyhoI'm sorry I couldn't help you.

HeyhoYou sure you want to do that, kid? Taking shortcuts isn't the way to get ahead in Life.
HeyhoAll right. So you're OK without ANY instructions? [Choice: Yes / No]
HeyhoFair enough.
HeyhoYou need some after all, eh? I see...
HeyhoWell, I can't teach you much. Just swing the axe. This isn't rock science, you know? Or...you know..."alchemy." Whatever they call it.
HeyhoDon't take this the wrong way, but you remind me a little bit of myself when I was young.
HeyhoI was a woodcutting prodigy. But I grew careless and reckless.
HeyhoSee, the forest spirits gave me permission to harvest Elder Logs. I thought I was some kind of superstar.
HeyhoThe royal family even gave me the title of Forest Protector.
HeyhoForest Destructor would have been more accurate.
HeyhoTruly, I didn't yet deserve the accolades I was receiving.
HeyhoBut I was blind to it, you know? If only I had listened to the warnings of the forest spirits...
HeyhoAh, I'm rambling. You just wanted to get on with it and get your license, right?
HeyhoOf course. How could I forget?
HeyhoWell, again, it's not like I could teach you much anyway.
HeyhoI mean, what good are words compared to the visceral heft of swinging an axe?
HeyhoOr the feel of standing deep in the woods, head craned to the sky, simply listening...
HeyhoThe murmur of a stream, the light seeping through the treetops. The scent of fallen leaves in the air...
HeyhoAh, the forest was my favorite place in the world.
HeyhoWell, it appears I've been rambling again. I do apologize.
HeyhoAfter all, I put down my axe. Who am I to wax poetic about the forest like I'm some kind of expert?
HeyhoWithout further ado, congratulations. You're a Woodcutter.
HeyhoSorry if that was a little anticlimactic. I'll be sure to notify the other Woodcutters of your status.
HeyhoNo need to worry—they'll accept you as a peer even though you haven't done the introductory quest.
HeyhoOne more thing. Be sure to report to me every so often, especially after felling new types of trees.
HeyhoThat reminds me of a funny story. It was about this time of year...the leaves were starting to turn...
HeyhoI spent an entire night in the woods cutting a great swath through the growth...
HeyhoOh dear. I'm afraid I was about to relate another extremely lengthy story. Pardon me.
