Heyho's House

Ow ow owchie! No worries. I'm fine. It's just my back acting funny.
Monika's such a dutiful, caring daughter... Even though I haven't done anything for her.

The Fledgling Woodcutter Legendary Lumber, Jack!

Huh? Who are you? Another Woodcutter wannabe?
Well, I'd say you've come to the right place...but that wouldn't be entirely accurate.
Stick around long enough and you'll see what I mean.
Anyway, it's true that our services are in high demand here in Reveria.
From Barrels to bows, you can't build much without quality timber.
Truth be told, the kingdom could use another GREAT Woodcutter, because I sure ain't cuttin' it.
Why? Well...it really boils down to one thing.
I'm pretty much the worst Woodcutter in the world. That's why.
Maybe I shouldn't have told you that. I suppose it's not exactly confidence inspiring.
Let me make it up to you. Take this. It should help you get started.
And I can do you one better. Go talk to a guy named Forrest out in the eastern woods.
He's the teacher you deserve...and kind of the unofficial Woodcutter Master right now.
Why is your voice so familiar? Did we meet recently?
Oh, yes, of course. It's you. Uh...
Sorry. I forgot your name.
Anyway, if you're here to ask me anything about woodcutting, I must refer you back to Forrest.
You've already felled three Oak Trees?
And sold them? Well, I'd say Forrest is doing a fine job with your training.
I still remember the first Dosh I earned as a Woodcutter.
It seems like it was just yesterday...
What?! They want an Elder Log?
Gah! It's like they haven't learned anything. That's a fool's errand!
Look, it's basically impossible.
Especially for a Novice like yourself.
And yet...you don't even seem discouraged. What's the opposite of that feeling? Hopeful?
Yes, hopeful! That's it. It's been so long since I've felt that way. I'm almost inspired.
You actually remind me a little bit of myself. Let's hope your story has a happier ending.
Course, I still think you're going to fail, but...
It looks like you won't give up no matter what I say, so I might as well try to help you.
This won't involve me putting an axe in my hand— those days are done. But there's one thing I can try.
This might seem odd, but I need you to shut your eyes and cover your ears, [Player].
That goes for everyone in here! I'm about to perform an ancient ritual...
O Forest Lady...hear my voice. I will now begin the ancient chant. *ahem*
♪ CHOPPY CHOPPY HAPPY TREE! LET THE SPIRIT COME TO ME!
Hear me, O Forest Lady. It is I, Heyho the cursed.
I...uh. Well, frankly I didn't think I'd ever call you like this again. But here we are.
A young Woodcutter with the heart of an Elder has moved me...as unlikely as that seems.
So please, wherever you are, drop what you're doing and lend us a hand!
What? What happened? Did the Forest Lady appear?
Well, I suppose that makes it official...
I'm no longer the Forest Protector.
I should have known it wouldn't work.
I haven't set foot in the forest in years. I spend more time with a glass in my hand than an axe.
What did I expect? Ah well. There's a lesson here, [Player]. Don't follow in my footsteps.
I'm sorry I couldn't help you.
Ah, the forest smells sweet. It's...been a while.
I ran into...an old acquaintance. And she made me realize how much I missed this.
Now, I have some advice for you, [Name 2]. Provided you're willing to listen.
Never forget that the forest spirits have permitted you to harvest Elder Trees. It is a rare privilege.
I earned the same privilege shortly after becoming a Woodcutter, just like you.
The royal family even gave a special title in recognition of my talent as a Woodcutter.
I was the Forest Protector.
Alas, the power went to my head, and I failed to treat the woods with the respect they were due.
But that's enough about me. I'm here to help YOU.
I want to make sure you don't repeat my mistakes.
Oh, yes! That is my role here. Well, let's take a look at your results.
Yes, yes, everything checks out.
Er...yes. Yes, of course.
Be sure to report to me every so often, especially after felling a new variety of tree.
Although I will never again put axe to wood, I am still your Master, and I will evaluate your efforts.
I'm the worst Master in any Life. Sorry, kid—you're stuck with me.
Believe it or not, I HAVE summoned the Forest Lady once. But it was years ago.
You sure you want to do that, kid? Taking shortcuts isn't the way to get ahead in Life.
All right. So you're OK without ANY instructions? [Choice: Yes / No]
Fair enough.
You need some after all, eh? I see...
Well, I can't teach you much. Just swing the axe. This isn't rock science, you know? Or...you know..."alchemy." Whatever they call it.
Don't take this the wrong way, but you remind me a little bit of myself when I was young.
I was a woodcutting prodigy. But I grew careless and reckless.
See, the forest spirits gave me permission to harvest Elder Logs. I thought I was some kind of superstar.
The royal family even gave me the title of Forest Protector.
Forest Destructor would have been more accurate.
Truly, I didn't yet deserve the accolades I was receiving.
But I was blind to it, you know? If only I had listened to the warnings of the forest spirits...
Ah, I'm rambling. You just wanted to get on with it and get your license, right?
Of course. How could I forget?
Well, again, it's not like I could teach you much anyway.
I mean, what good are words compared to the visceral heft of swinging an axe?
Or the feel of standing deep in the woods, head craned to the sky, simply listening...
The murmur of a stream, the light seeping through the treetops. The scent of fallen leaves in the air...
Ah, the forest was my favorite place in the world.
Well, it appears I've been rambling again. I do apologize.
After all, I put down my axe. Who am I to wax poetic about the forest like I'm some kind of expert?
Without further ado, congratulations. You're a Woodcutter.
Sorry if that was a little anticlimactic. I'll be sure to notify the other Woodcutters of your status.
No need to worry—they'll accept you as a peer even though you haven't done the introductory quest.
One more thing. Be sure to report to me every so often, especially after felling new types of trees.
That reminds me of a funny story. It was about this time of year...the leaves were starting to turn...
I spent an entire night in the woods cutting a great swath through the growth...
Oh dear. I'm afraid I was about to relate another extremely lengthy story. Pardon me.

The Woodcutter's Tale

But I do have one more very serious speech to give you before you begin. I'll try to be brief. *ahem* Welcome aboard. That's all.
I'm happy for you. Really! I know I'm not the most expressive guy, but I mean it. Make me proud.

Heyho

What? You actually want to talk to me? Heh. Trust me, kid. I don't have anything to say. Well, unless you want to hear the ramblings of a failed Woodcutter. Nah, I'll spare you. Monika and Forrest are the only ones I'll burden with my musings.
I'll give you one thing—you're persistent. But I'm telling you my story's barely worth hearing. I mean, I guess I'm a hero of sorts. A failed hero. So if that's the kind of story you like... See, I used to be known as the Forest Protector. Ah, what's the use. You're not even a Woodcutter! Tell you what. If you decide to try out the Woodcutter Life, come back and see me. Then I'll tell you my story. Promise.
So you decided to become a Woodcutter after all, eh? Well, hopefully you'll do better than I. I don't really feel qualified to give you advice, but here's some anyway. You should explore Reveria as much as possible. You'll find new types of trees to cut everywhere. And get to know the tree spirits...the Leafes. They are your friends. Good luck, [Player]. I wish you the best.
A true Woodcutter becomes at one with the forest and the trees before beginning a harvest. That's why I can't cut trees anymore. The connection has been lost.
OK, all mystical stuff aside, the most important attribute for a Woodcutter is Strength. Don't get me wrong—Vitality and Dexterity are important too, but without Strength, well... without Strength, you'd be like Monika. The poor girl has a gift for finding the right trees... but she can't swing an axe to save her Life.
Strength. Dexterity. Vitality. These are what you'll need to become a Woodcutter of note. Strength to wield a heavy axe, Dexterity to strike the wood true, and Vitality to keep at it all day long.

Congratulations, young Apprentice! You're coming along quickly! Let's see if I can offer you a nugget of wisdom on this occasion. Hmm... Ah, of course! Here's a technique known as Mettle. It's a great finishing move. If you use it when the tree is nearly felled, you'll end up with more timber than usual. Forrest can probably sing you a song about it. It's one of his favorite moves.
Using Mettle as a finishing move is a great way to get the most timber possible from a tree. But there's no such thing as a free lunch. The move will cost you a fair bit of SP. So if you're planning on harvesting many trees, it's wise to pack some rations that can restore your SP.

Congratulations on making Adept! Your progress is truly inspirational. Say, if you're thinking about traveling to Al Maajik, you might want to visit a man named Cedar. Look for him inside Library Al Maajik. He's a naturalist—a good man for a Woodcutter to know.
Have you looked up Cedar yet? Remember? The naturalist who lives in Al Maajik? It would be worth your while to seek him out. And please say hello from me when you see him.

Congratulations! You made Expert! And how are you liking your new skill, Mega Mettle? You've probably noticed that it uses a bit more SP than Mettle, and it takes longer to charge. But I think you'll find that it's a skill well worth knowing. Keep on practicing!
Congratulations! You made Expert! I think you're ready to learn some new techniques. So I'll teach you Mega Mettle! It's similar to Mettle, but much more powerful. Of course, it takes a little longer to charge up, but it can be well worth it. Give it a try! Practice makes perfect.
I've told you a little bit about how I used to be known as the Forest Protector, right? Right. Well, it was traditionally a title handed down by the king. But, of course, those days are over. I suppose I'm the last official Forest Protector, but you can carry on the tradition in spirit, if not name. Yes, you have the potential to be a REAL Forest Protector. Not a phony like I was.
So you're really interested in hearing more about my history as a Forest Protector, eh? Well, I suppose a few details couldn't hurt. Like I said, I was somewhat of a prodigy. But when the king named me Forest Protector, well, the power went to my head. I suppose I ruined the title for everyone, but the spirit of the thing lives on. And you know what, [Player]? If anyone deserves to carry on the legacy, it's you. Just try not to summon the Forest Lady into a cold water fountain, OK? Ha!
Believe it or not, I knew this day would come. You've earned the Master rank! Now, don't make the same mistakes I did. Remain humble...and respectful to the forest. If you stay true to yourself, it won't be long before you far eclipse my greatest accomplishments. Last but not least, here's a little something to mark the occasion. Congratulations!
The people of Castele may not realize it, but you're providing them with a great service. After all, the trees you harvest become furniture, houses, pillars, firewood... Keep up the good work!

Heroic deeds lead to a Heroic rank. Congratulations! I think you're ready for a truly epic challenge. So, according to legend, the greatest trees in all of Reveria grow up in the sky...on Terra Nimbus. Ready to test your strength, Hero? Seek out these trees and harvest them. Don't be afraid... This is your destiny. Good luck.
Hey, did you hear that? It was the forest calling! Maybe I'm still a Woodcutter at heart...
Hey, did you hear that? It was the forest calling! Maybe I'm still a Woodcutter at heart...
Well, this is it. You're a living Legend. There's nothing more I can teach you. I hope I've been a serviceable Master to you, despite my flaws and insecurities. Truth be told, you've probably helped me more than I helped you. My love for the forest has been rekindled. And I can once again hear the whisperings of the trees. All thanks to you! Once again, please accept my sincerest congratulations.
Can you hear it? The happy whispers of the trees reborn as lovingly crafted furniture and houses? Yes, the forest spirits are pleased. You give them new Life with each harvest. That's what makes you the true Forest Protector.

You're not satisfied with Legend status, are you? You're going for something...more? Well, it won't be easy. But don't let me discourage you!
You know, this whole thing has been a wake-up call for me... I mean you becoming a Legend and surpassing my greatest achievements. I've stopped wallowing in self-pity, stopped wasting time at the Crown. You've really inspired me. And you're still reaching higher. So thank you! Thank you so much.

Well, this is a bittersweet moment. You've reached the Creator rank! I'm proud, of course, but a little bit disappointed that I flamed out before reaching a similar level. Ah, well. Be assured that I am genuinely happy for you. In fact, here's a small gift to prove it. Enjoy!
Well, the time has come for the bird to leave its nest. So it goes. It's a remarkable feeling to see your student so far exceed your own abilities. No need to worry about me, of course. You've rekindled my love of the woods. So off you go! Congratulations...and thank you.

Well, you've been busy, haven't you?
Why don't you come back when you've harvested some more timber?
Congratulations, Apprentice [Player]! If you're looking for more adventure than the Grassy Plains can offer, I can help. Go explore Mount Snowpeak...the Elderwood...or Port Puerto. It's a big world out there.
Nice job, [Player]. You made Adept! I've heard the local Carpenters love your work. Keep up the good work, and keep that axe sharp.
You're really coming along, [Player]. Making Expert this quickly is almost unheard of. And you're developing quite the reputation around Castele too. Why, your timber is even being used to renovate parts of the royal castle. Keep up the good work. The wood you provide is the very backbone of this kingdom.
Well, Master [Player]... Has a nice ring to it, doesn't it? Do take some time to enjoy this occasion, but don't forget there's more work to be done. I think you have the potential for greatness—the potential to become a true Forest Protector. But I'm getting ahead of myself. Enjoy today, and know that your work is much appreciated. Cheers!
Congratulations, [Player]! Er, excuse me... [Player] the HERO! The trees and creatures of the forest see you as family. You have a rare gift indeed. Now, before you begin celebrating in earnest, be sure to stop by the castle and report to King Erik. I'm sure he'll offer you some words of praise...along with a substantial gift. Go and enjoy this day. You've earned it!
Today, I am honored to find myself in the presence of a Legend. Congratulations, [Player]! I'd love to spend the whole day just listening to tales of your adventures, but you have plans! See, King Erik has already heard of your success. He wants to meet right away to congratulate you. So...hurry off to reap your reward. We'll chat again another day.
You've got a lot to learn, but you're making good progress. Just remember to be humble. Ask for help when you need it. Other Woodcutters can be a great resource.
Congratulations on making Apprentice. Seems like you're getting into the swing of things!
You're beginning to develop a pretty strong reputation, you know that? I've been hearing great things from the community of Woodcutters. Keep it up.
As an Expert, it's important to avoid falling into a routine. Explore! And treat each new tree as if it's your first one. That's the secret to staying fresh.
Well, today I greet you as a professional equal, Master. It's been amazing to watch your progress. There isn't much left for me to teach you...not that I taught you much to begin with. I do hope you'll continue to develop as a Woodcutter. There is still more to discover!
Have you spoken with the king since your last promotion? I know, I know. It's a bit intimidating to make an appearance in the Royal Court. Just remember the king wants to praise YOU. Nothing else is expected of you.
Have you spoken with King Erik? I know he's anxious to meet with you. After all, the timber you provide benefits so many people in Castele. People count on you. I think the king just wants to recognize your good work in person.

Ah, today would be a fine day to spend in the forest. Anyway, how can I help you? [Choice: Report / Chat / Cancel]
Oh, hello, [Player]. What brings you here in the middle of the night? [Choice: Report / Chat / Cancel]
Sorry, but you're not a Woodcutter at the moment. So I can't help you right now.
What's on your mind today, [Player]? You seem preoccupied. You...you're looking for another challenge? Bwahaha! What could I possibly offer you? You've already harvested all the sacred trees, logged each and every forest in Reveria... Although, if the legend is true... Well. I can offer you something mysterious to chase. But I can't promise it won't be a fool's errand. There's an old folktale about something called the Millennial Tree. No Woodcutter has ever actually SEEN it, of course. Supposedly, harvesting just a single branch is the ultimate accomplishment a Woodcutter can claim. Now, I've heard some of the Leafes whispering about this legend. Personally, I'm skeptical. But I can give you more information if you are curious.
Hello, [Player]. How can I help you? [Choice: Special Request / Chat / Oh, nothing]
Well, well, well. The legend of the Millennial Tree claims another victim. You sure you want to do this? [Choice: Yes / No]
All right. I can't promise anything, but here's what I know. Supposedly the Millennial Tree is right under our noses here in the West Grassy Plains. But it's only visible to one who has harvested all manner of sacred trees. Luckily, you fit that description. So, in theory, you should be able to find the thing. If you do, you will want to obtain an item known as the [Name 2] as proof. You know what? I actually want to come with you on this one. I may or may not be able to help, but I simply have to see what happens!
Heh. Well, I don't blame you. But do come see me if you change your mind.
Well, I'll be. Never in my days as a Woodcutter did I believe I'd see a [Name 2]. You're some kind of miracle worker! Or, at the very least, you're the greatest Woodcutter in Reveria.
So I have a little something for you. Don't get too excited—it's not commensurate with your greatness. Anyway, Forrest is always finding weird little things on his walks through the woods. He brought these to me the other day, and neither of us knew what to make of them. At the very least, they're unique. Just like you.
Speak with me any time if you want to take on the Special Request again. I've got more of those golden coins like the one I gave you before. You won't be doing it for nothing, see? The Leafes will keep an eye out for that tree.
As I said, the Leafes claim that the Millennial Tree is somewhere in the West Grassy Plains. Keep at it. You are qualified to seek the tree, so it should reveal itself to you.
Are you sure you want to give up? [Choice: Yes / No]
Not a quitter, huh? Heh. I should have known. That's what makes you so great. Keep scouring the West Grassy Plains. That's where the Leafes claim the tree can be found. Good luck. And let me know if I can tag along, OK?
Aw, I was hoping you wouldn't say that. But that's selfish. I just want to see the tree for myself. No problem. Just let me know if you change your mind.
