The Fledgling Carpenter 72
Woody! Get ahold of yourself!
Yeah? So? That's nothing to get so worked up about.
You're a great Carpenter, man. You're the Master Carpenter! Just show this kid the ropes, OK?
Woody, take a deep breath. You're not making any sense.
Pick up the pace a little, Woody...
Why don't I get you a glass of water? You seem a bit parched.
Oh, brother.
Sorry about that. Woody's a top-notch Carpenter, but...well, you saw what he's like.
So what's your name?
[Player], is it? I'm Sawyer. Nice to meet you.
So yeah, as I was saying...Woody isn't much for public speaking. Or private speaking, really.
But when he picks up a saw, he's a flat-out genius. Funny how that works.
Of course, his grandfather was the legendary Carpenter Marimo. So he's got wood in his blood.
He's just not a natural leader. Being a Master has been hard for him to handle.
But hey, he's trying. Anyway, we should probably stop talking behind his back. Hey, Woody!
Aw, dang. He escaped.
He should really spend more time supervising, but he mostly delegates everything to me.
Some people get fed up and quit the program. Here's hoping you stick it out.
Anyway, Woody gave you a saw, right?
Great. Then I'll go ahead and teach you a basic craft so you can get started.
Now, our basic building blocks are beams. You'll find that we use 'em for pretty much everything.
And, of course, we make beams out of rough logs. You can get logs at the market...
Or you can ask a Woodcutter directly.
As a matter of fact, there's a Woodcutter by the name of Forrest out in the east woods.
It'd be well worth you paying him a visit. So let's make that your first task as a Carpenter.
I'll work on getting the workshop set up for you. All you need to do is bring back some logs. Good luck!
Hey, how's it going? Were you able to track down Forrest? And some logs?
Well, how was Forrest doing?
He told you he could already smell the shavings on you, eh? Ha! He's good, but not that good.
Forrest is quite a character, though. I'd love to see what he could do with a saw.
Anyway, let's get started. It's time I taught you how to use your own saw.
And there you have it! Let me introduce you to the workbench.
Just stand right over there to get started.
All right. Now, the only Carpenter I know who works better when he's nervous is Woody. So you should just try to relax.
Let's start by making an Oak Beam, OK?
Don't forget to equip your saw!
Hey, nice work! Feels pretty good to craft something with your own hands, doesn't it?
Like I said before, beams are a Carpenter's bread and butter.
You'll use 'em to craft all kinds of things, and you can always sell 'em at market if you need the Dosh.
Of course, beams made from high-quality trees tend to fetch the most Dosh.
And as you improve as a Carpenter, the quality of your work will improve. That means even more Dosh.
But enough about all that. Let's go check in with Woody, OK? Uh...where is he?
Gah! He slipped out again!
I can give you all the training in the world, but you need a Master to do the next part.
See, the Master Carpenter's supposed to give you a challenge. If you pass that, you're a Fledgling!
Tell you what. Why don't you stop by Woody's place and see if he's around?
I'd come with you, but I have to keep things running here. You'll be fine on your own, I think.
His place is over in the Artisan District. Southeast of here. Good luck!
Wow, Woody! You really nailed that. It's like you weren't even nervous!
Aw, man! I shoulda kept my mouth shut.
But you know what? You were doing fine. Don't let my slipup knock you off course. Keep going!
But nothing! You've got this, Woody!
Wow, amazing! You really did it.
Ready to do some real carpentry?
All right, then. Let's get started on that Oak Beam.
Woody is the Master, and the best Carpenter I know. But his self-confidence could use a little work.
There's a Woodcutter by the name of Forrest out in the east woods. As your first Carpenter task, why not pay him a visit and ask for some materials?
Woody's house is in the Artisan District. Good luck tracking him down... He's a slippery one.
Hey, were you able to find Woody? He's legendary for disappearing randomly. Just like Marimo...
OK, here's the skinny. The Custom Wooden Chair is a Marimo original. You'll need Dandelion Cotton and Beaver Beams to make one. Now, Dandelion Cotton is easy to find. You can just buy it in the Artisan District. But Beaver Beams...man...I'm not sure where to get those.
You actually tracked down some Beaver Beams? Wow, I'm impressed! Now you just need the Dandelion Cotton, and you'll be all set. If you don't already have some, just check out the shops in the Artisan District. Good luck!
Incredible. You actually did it! You crafted a Custom Wooden Chair!
Aw, c'mon, Woody. The least you can do is NOT celebrate. Proper schooling is important!
Here we go again...
Sorry, chief. You're on your own here.
*sigh* Fine. Here you go, kid. Everything you need to do this job.
Right. And that's all you, Woody. You're the Master, remember?
You can do it, man! Take a deep breath.
Brilliant. You're doing great, Woody.
Dang! That's cold, Woody.
Good...good. Almost done, Woody...
Woody!
Chat 22
You wouldn't think Woody could be great at ANYTHING after talking to him, right? But the man has a way with wood that's simply out of this world.
Y'know, Woody had another promising student recently. Name of Decker. He might have turned out to be Woody's equal, had he stuck with the program. But we haven't seen him in ages. I wonder what he's up to now...
I truly can't believe you were able to make one of Marimo's legendary crafts on your first try! You've got potential, kid. Stick with this Life. You'll go far.
Sorry...I'm busy right now. Can you come back later?
Hey, I've got a little something for you. I think you'll find you can never have too many Oak Logs. Check out the marketplace for other kinds of materials. You're gonna need 'em!
You can just buy logs at shops, it's true. But the cost really adds up. That's why a lot of really serious Carpenters also have Woodcutter Licenses—it can save you Dosh.
Congrats on making Apprentice! You're moving up the ranks pretty quickly, kid. Let me give you some advice I wish someone had given me when I was starting out. No matter how much you love being a Carpenter, there's no harm in trying out another Life...or three. There's no better way to gather materials than by changing your Life frequently. So get out there and experiment! Oh, and here's a little something to help you get started.
I know I should practice what I preach, but I haven't actually changed my own Life very often. It's a bit nerve-racking to me for some reason. Maybe I've been a Carpenter too long...
Hey, you made Adept! That's great! Now you can take on a whole bunch of new crafts. Of course, you'll need all kinds of exotic new materials...like Sugar Logs, for example. Have you been to Al Maajik yet? You should really check out the market there. Anyway, I've got a couple of spare Sugar Logs to get you started. Enjoy!
Wait. Beavy and Beavo are beavers? I could have SWORN they were otters! Mind blown. Anyway, if you're short on Sugar Logs, remember you can always get more in Al Maajik. There's even a local workshop that'll let you craft to your heart's content. Not a bad excuse for a trip.
Nice work making Expert level! Now you can start using extra materials. Did Woody tell you about that? You can add a little extra boost to weapons, armor...all kinds of stuff. Like, say you're making a bow...and you add some Water Mana... You know what? You should just try it. I don't want to spoil the surprise.
Have you tried adding special materials to a craft yet? It's one of the perks of being an Expert.
I've been waiting for this day, [Player]. You've achieved the Master rank! That means you can take over all the random things that Woody asks me to do, right? Heh. Don't give me that look. I'm just kidding. Great job. Here's a little something to celebrate.
You've really made a name for yourself in this Life. I'm proud of you, kid!
I don't think there's anything else Woody or I can teach you. You're advancing beyond our level. Maybe we'll start going to you for advice. I'm not even joking! At least we can still help you out with materials from time to time. Here. Take this. Make something amazing...like you always do.
If anyone in Castele can reach the Legend rank as a Carpenter, it's you, [Player].
Unbelievable. You did it. You're a Legend, ←*
Did I already tell you how proud I am of you? I did? OK, then what are you doing talking to me? Get back to work on more amazing carpentry!
How's it going, Demi-Creator? I think you're about to outgrow this workshop. It was probably pretty intimidating when you were starting out. Now it's just business as usual. I wish I could tell you that we had a bigger, fancier workshop in the works...but it's not in the cards.
If you want to shake up your usual routine, you could always try working in Al Maajik or Port Puerto. They both have perfectly functional workshops...and the nearby markets have some interesting materials.
You made Creator! I can't believe I used to help TEACH you! Heck, people stop ME on the street just to talk about you. You're a celebrity!
Thanks for everything. It seems kind of weird for a teacher to thank a pupil, but there it is. Your success has been so good for Woody...and for me too. Congratulations!
