The Fledgling Carpenter
Following Greatness
Woody has tasked you with a Carpenter challenge! Complete the challenge to receive your license! Better start chipping away!
Script (423 lines)
WoodyOh geez. Oh boy. Look, I'm not really cut out for
this. Just give me a moment here, OK?
SawyerWoody! Get ahold of yourself!
WoodyI'm sorry! It's just...this person standing here in
front of me wants to become a Carpenter.
And, well, you know...it's kind of my job to make
that happen. Oh boy...
SawyerYeah? So? That's nothing to get so worked up
about.
SawyerYou're a great Carpenter, man. You're the Master
Carpenter! Just show this kid the ropes, OK?
WoodyWell...if you say so...
WoodySo...uh...carpentry. It's a lot like...oh, I don't know.
It's a lot like...flying a kite.
WoodyBecause...um...they're both things you can do on
Saturday. Or Tuesday, I suppose. Or any day, really.
WoodyI guess that's not a very helpful analogy. Let's see.
Uh, carpentry is kind of like...gardening. Uh...
SawyerWoody, take a deep breath. You're not making
any sense.
WoodyI'm not? Oh, that's what I was afraid of! Aw, geez...
WoodyOK, let's start over. So you want to be a
Carpenter! Hoo boy, where to begin?
WoodyWell, I guess the first question you gotta ask
yourself is...do you like wood shavings?
WoodyBecause this job is, like, 99% wood shavings. And
1% splinters.
WoodyAnd...uh...it's helpful if you like the smell of wood.
Because, boy, it's everywhere!
WoodyYou...you do like the smell of wood, don't you?
SawyerPick up the pace a little, Woody...
WoodyRight. Well, I may not look it, but I am in fact the
Carpenter Master around here.
WoodyThat is...uh...I've got a Masterish level of skill
when it comes to carpenting things...uh...
WoodyI have no idea what I'm doing.
WoodyOh, this is like my worst nightmare come to Life...
SawyerWhy don't I get you a glass of water? You seem a
bit parched.
WoodyYes! No! I don't know! I can't do this! Here—just
take this saw and get out of here!
WoodyCongrats—you're a Carpenter. See you later!
WoodyWell, my work here is done. Sawyer can take over
now. Whew!
SawyerOh, brother.★ Next Location:

SawyerSorry about that. Woody's a top-notch Carpenter,
but...well, you saw what he's like.
SawyerSo what's your name?
Sawyer[Player], is it? I'm Sawyer. Nice to meet you.
SawyerSo yeah, as I was saying...Woody isn't much for
public speaking. Or private speaking, really.
SawyerBut when he picks up a saw, he's a flat-out genius.
Funny how that works.
SawyerOf course, his grandfather was the legendary
Carpenter Marimo. So he's got wood in his blood.
SawyerHe's just not a natural leader. Being a Master has
been hard for him to handle.
SawyerBut hey, he's trying. Anyway, we should probably
stop talking behind his back. Hey, Woody!
SawyerAw, dang. He escaped.
SawyerHe should really spend more time supervising, but
he mostly delegates everything to me.
SawyerSome people get fed up and quit the program.
Here's hoping you stick it out.
SawyerAnyway, Woody gave you a saw, right?
SawyerGreat. Then I'll go ahead and teach you a basic
craft so you can get started.
SawyerNow, our basic building blocks are beams. You'll
find that we use 'em for pretty much everything.
SawyerAnd, of course, we make beams out of rough logs.
You can get logs at the market...
SawyerOr you can ask a Woodcutter directly.
SawyerAs a matter of fact, there's a Woodcutter by the
name of Forrest out in the east woods.
SawyerIt'd be well worth you paying him a visit. So let's
make that your first task as a Carpenter.
SawyerI'll work on getting the workshop set up for you. All
you need to do is bring back some logs. Good luck!★ Next Location:

Forrest*sniff sniff* Eh?
ForrestYep, I can smell a Novice Carpenter a mile away.
It's the wood shavin's. So yer one o' Woody's?
Forrest[Name 2], is it? An' ye wanna be a
Carpenter, do ye?
ForrestSo ye want tae carve out a career as a Carpenter.
Good on ye.
ForrestSo ye want tae carve out a career as a Carpenter.
Good on ye.
ForrestCourse, Woody isnae the most...how should I say...
reliable Master, is he?
ForrestCourse, Woody isnae the most...how should I say...

ForrestNo need tae worry. Ye'll find plenty o' capable
folks tae help ye.
ForrestAfter all, us Woodcutter types an' Carpenter types
have got tae stick together, eh?
ForrestI've got tae say, I do envy ye the hours ye get tae
spend in the shop, sniffin' that lovely sawdust!
ForrestAnyway, yer here lookin' fer some Oak Logs,
am I right?
ForrestWell, go get 'em yerself. What kinda Woodcutter
are ye?
ForrestI'm happy tae help. Here ye go.
ForrestAch, I'm jest foolin'. Since ye came all the way here,
I'll pony up.
ForrestWait...what are ye playin' at? Ye already have
a log, ye wee scoundrel!
ForrestWait...what are ye playin' at? Ye already have
a log, ye wee scoundrel!
ForrestMaybe yer jest tryin' tae beef up yer inventory on
the sly. I like that. Reminds me o' me. Here ye go.
ForrestNow, no need fer thanks. Woodcutters an'
Carpenters need tae help each other out.
ForrestCourse if ye find yerself in need o' more logs, ye
can help yerself. The forest's right there, mate.
ForrestOh, an' by the way...
ForrestI couldnae actually smell the wood shavin's on ye.
A wee birdie told me ye might be comin'.
ForrestThat's not tae say I don't have ANY special powers.
Don't unnerestimate ol' Forrest, eh?
ForrestAll right, mate. Do yer best and get tae carpentin'!★ Next Location:

SawyerHey, how's it going? Were you able to track down
Forrest? And some logs?
SawyerWell, how was Forrest doing?
SawyerHe told you he could already smell the shavings on
you, eh? Ha! He's good, but not that good.
SawyerForrest is quite a character, though. I'd love to see
what he could do with a saw.
SawyerAnyway, let's get started. It's time I taught you how
to use your own saw.
SawyerAnd there you have it! Let me introduce you to
the workbench.
SawyerJust stand right over there to get started.
SawyerAll right. Now, the only Carpenter I know who works
better when he's nervous is Woody.
So you should just try to relax.
SawyerLet's start by making an Oak Beam, OK?
SawyerDon't forget to equip your saw!★ Next Location:

SawyerHey, nice work! Feels pretty good to craft
something with your own hands, doesn't it?
SawyerLike I said before, beams are a Carpenter's bread
and butter.
SawyerYou'll use 'em to craft all kinds of things, and you
can always sell 'em at market if you need the Dosh.
SawyerOf course, beams made from high-quality trees tend
to fetch the most Dosh.
SawyerAnd as you improve as a Carpenter, the quality of
your work will improve. That means even more Dosh.
SawyerBut enough about all that. Let's go check in with
Woody, OK? Uh...where is he?
SawyerGah! He slipped out again!
SawyerI can give you all the training in the world, but you
need a Master to do the next part.
SawyerSee, the Master Carpenter's supposed to give you
a challenge. If you pass that, you're a Fledgling!
SawyerTell you what. Why don't you stop by Woody's place
and see if he's around?
SawyerI'd come with you, but I have to keep things running
here. You'll be fine on your own, I think.
SawyerHis place is over in the Artisan District. Southeast
of here. Good luck!★ Next Location:

WoodyOh no!
WoodyYou found me! I mean...hello.
WoodyLook, I'm really sorry. It's just...try not to sneak up
on me, OK?
WoodyAll right. Let me just catch my breath. *huff*
*huff* *huff*
WoodyAlmost got it! *huff* *huff* *huff* *huff*
Woody*huff* Hmm. I thought maybe you'd get bored and
leave. Well, at least my heart rate has gone down...
WoodyStrange, I'm actually feeling sort of calm after all
that deep breathing. Ahhh.
WoodySo you must have crafted some Oak Beams, right?
Is that why you've come to my house?
WoodyWell, that's a great first step. Sawyer must be doing
a good job teaching you.
WoodyYou're both doing so well...and here I am, barely
able to hold a conversation...
WoodyWell, the least I can do is teach you some useful
techniques.
WoodyGot 'em? Good! Wow, that was actually
pretty easy!
WoodyAlthough...I feel like I'm forgetting something. Oh
no, I knew this was too good to be true!
WoodyOh, Woody! You were on a roll! Come on, think...
WoodyOh, right, the Fledgling challenge! Yes! No! I have
no idea what the challenge should be. Oh dear...
WoodyEr...how about you...make a very hot cup of tea?
No, that's too easy. Hmm...
Maybe if you run a lap around Castele Castle in
under eight minutes...
???Woody! Get ahold of yourself!
WoodyHuh? Who is that?
???Listen to me, Woody.
???Breathe in the scent of something woodsy and relax.
Fresh sawdust. Log piles. New furniture. Whatever.
???You can do it. Take a deep breath. Now!
WoodyBut...I already tried that! I guess it DID seem to
help before...
WoodyOK. Here we go. *huff* *huff*
Woody*haaaaah* *haaaaah* *haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah*
???Good, good. Now listen closely. You are a strong,
confident Carpenter!
???Think of the stillness of the wood in the forest, and
let it calm your troubled mind.
Woody*huff* *huff* *huff* Hmm...
WoodyWow, I feel so much better! Thanks...uh...whoever
you are.
WoodyWait—was that just a voice in my head? Maybe I
really am going mad!
WoodyBah, who cares! I feel so good, I don't even mind.
Oh, and I've thought of a challenge for you.
WoodyI popped into one of the furniture shops earlier
today, and the merchant had a custom order for me.
WoodyBut I was feeling so distracted and nervous that I had
to decline. So maybe you can take care of it!
WoodyYes, I think that would make for a fine challenge!
WoodyNow, I'm afraid I don't remember ANYTHING about
the order. I had a lot on my mind, you see.
WoodySo you'll need to meet with the gentleman yourself
and then go ahead and complete the order.
WoodyI'll be waiting here practicing my breathing...★ Next Location:

GoodwoodGreetings,
GoodwoodOh, you're Woody's pupil! Welcome, welcome!
PoppyHey, what's going on? Who's this?
PoppyNo way! You're Woody's new student? Hah!
PoppySorry. That was rude. I'm just surprised he's taking
on a pupil. I'm his little sister, Poppy.
PoppyWhat are you doing here, anyway? Did my bro
send you on some kind of errand?
PoppyI see! So he sent you out to do the actual work
while he putters around at home? So typical!
GoodwoodYes...about that. No offense, [Name 3], but the
project I had in mind for Woody was a bit...complex.
GoodwoodI must admit, I was hoping for the kind of master
craftsmanship that only Woody can provide.
GoodwoodYou're aware, of course, that he's the grandson of
the legendary Carpenter Marimo?
GoodwoodAnd you're just...well...you know...
PoppyHey, hold on a minute!
PoppyYou're just gonna dismiss Woody's star pupil
like that?
PoppyMy brother may be afraid of his own shadow,
but he's an excellent judge of talent.
PoppyHe wouldn't have sent someone who wasn't up
to the task.
PoppyI mean, you can already smell the sawdust coming
off this kid. That's the mark of a true Carpenter!
Kind LadyListen to the girl, you old fool! She's right! The
nose knows.
GoodwoodWell...I question your blind reliance on simple
olfactory input...but OK.
GoodwoodI'll let [Name 3] here help me out.
PoppyNice!
GoodwoodNow, I'm afraid it's not a particularly simple request,
and I will require the completed product soon.
PoppyWait...are you assigning him a Custom Wooden
Chair?
GoodwoodYes. What of it?
PoppyWell! I just happen to be one of the only people
ever to have sat in one of those chairs.
GoodwoodIs that so?
PoppyYep! It was a long time ago. Grandpa brought it
by the house just after he completed it.
PoppyIt didn't look like anything special, but he told me
to hop on and give it a try.
PoppySo...I did!
Kind LadyAND?
PoppyOh, it was sooooooo comfortable. I never wanted
to stand up again. I immediately fell asleep!
Kind LadyGoodness! You'd have to be careful with a chair
like that around.
PoppyYeah, I think I must have been asleep for hours.
The next thing I knew, it was dinnertime!
GoodwoodHow remarkable!
Kind LadyWell, I think it's fantastic that this young Carpenter
is getting a chance to make one.
PoppyYeah! It's gonna be great.
PoppyWith the instructions Grandpa passed down to
Woody, I'm sure it can be done.
PoppyWell...Grandpa's instructions...and MY help, that is!
Whaddya say, [Name 3]?
GoodwoodYes, I believe that's a terrific idea. I'd be more
comfortable if Poppy were involved.
PoppyGreat! Let's get started right away. I know Grandpa's
favorite source for materials.
PoppyWhat are we waiting for? You need to finish making
that chair so I can try sitting in it again!
Kind LadyWoo-hoo! This really has nothing to do with me,
but for some reason I'm super excited!★ Next Location:

Inn MasterWelcome to Fine Woods and Leather. How can
I help you?
Inn MasterOh, Poppy! How are you doing? It's been a while.
Inn MasterAnd who's your friend here?
PoppyOh, this is [Name 1]... Only the next great
Carpenter in Reveria!
PoppyJust kidding! But [Name 1] here is Woody's new
pupil, and
Inn MasterAh, is that so? Well, let's have a look at the craft,
shall we?
Inn MasterOh, goodness! Marimo's Custom Wooden Chair!
This really takes me back.
PoppyYes, I was hoping you'd heard of it! So do you
have the materials we need to get started?
Inn MasterI'm afraid not. Some of them are fairly exotic. I don't
even know where to get a Beaver Beam.
Inn MasterA lot of Marimo's crafts were specialized like this.
You have your work cut out for you.
Inn MasterHowever, I do recall that whenever Marimo made this
chair, he would always stock up on Oak Beams...
Inn MasterI'm not really sure how he used them, but...if you'd
like some Oak Beams, they're on the house.
PoppyReally? Thanks!
Inn MasterOf course. Think nothing of it. You two have
awakened some pleasant memories for me today.
Inn MasterAs for the Beaver Beams...perhaps you can track
down someone else who used to help Marimo.
PoppySomeone else who used to help Grandpa? Hmm...
Inn MasterAs for the Dandelion Cotton...well, that's common
enough around here. Try asking a Tailor.
PoppyRight, of course! We'll do that. Thank you!
PoppySo...we need to find another one of Grandpa's old
associates. I'm not sure where to begin...
PoppyBut at least the Dandelion Cotton should be easy
enough to get.
PoppySo let's start with that. My friend Taylor at Castele
Chapel might be able to help us.

PoppyHey, Taylooooooor!
TaylorHey, Poppy! What's up?
TaylorAnd who's your friend?
TaylorOh, and how's it going, [Name 7]? I didn't know
you were friends with Poppy.
PoppyWe've just met, actually. Woody's new pupil,
you know?
PoppyAnyway, we came here to ask you a tiny favor...
PoppySo put on your Tailor hat, Taylor! Bet you've never
heard that one before, eh?
Taylor*groan* Aw, come on, Poppy. You can do better
than that! Anyway, whaddya need?
PoppyWell, we're trying to reproduce one of Grandpa's
old designs. It's a special chair.
PoppyAnd apparently we need some "soft dandelions" or
something?
TaylorOh, you must mean Dandelion Cotton, right? Can
I take a look at the craft?
TaylorYep. That's easy enough. I can make some up for
you using Dandelion Puffs. No prob.
TaylorYou guys keep yourselves busy... I'll be back with
the material in a few minutes.
PoppyOkaaaay. Hmm.
PoppyOh! I know. This is an easy, fun game. First, pick
a number between 3 and 483. Got it?
PoppyNow divide your number by 10. Then spell that
number out, remembering the third letter...
TaylorOK, it's ready!
PoppyOh, we didn't even get to finish our game! Oh well.
You're the best, Taylor.
PoppySo how much do we owe you?
TaylorDon't be silly. It's nothing.
PoppyAw, thanks a bunch!
PoppyNow to somehow get our hands on some
Beaver Beams...
PoppyWe need to find someone else who worked with
Grandpa...and I'm stumped.
PoppyHe didn't talk about carpentry with other people
much. Although...he talked to his pets all the time!
TaylorOh yeah...Beavy and Beavo! How are those little
guys doing, anyway?
PoppyThey're busy as ever! Cute little guys...

MarimoHa ha! Ah, sweet little Poppy.
MarimoOh ho! What's this? Another young Carpenter?
MarimoWhy are you looking at me like that? It's like you've
seen a ghost!
MarimoI assure you, I am very real. Although I've been...
traveling...for quite some time.
MarimoAh...if only that were as exciting as it sounds.
MarimoAnyway, I must ask you a question. Do you like the
scent of fresh sawdust? Log piles? New furniture?
MarimoYes? Yes! I do believe you have the makings of
a fine Carpenter.
MarimoOf course, as a young Carpenter, you'll need the
tutelage of a true Master. Do you know Woody?
MarimoHe's already your Master? Well! Good for him. I'm
glad to see he's challenging himself.
MarimoWait...this doesn't make sense. So when I was giving
him that little pep talk down the chimney...
Marimohe was mumbling in the general direction of
someone... That must have been you!
MarimoYou're [Name 6], aren't you?
MarimoWell, nice to meet you. I'm glad you've been
spending time with my little Poppy!
MarimoAlso, you probably already picked up on this, but
Woody's not the most...eloquent...teacher.
So let me help you out. Here's a technique he
probably hasn't gotten around to teaching you yet.
MarimoYou got it! Now you've got everything you need to
craft my famous chair.
MarimoWell, it was good to meet you, but I've got to be on
my way. See you around, kid!
Beavy*skree* *skree* *skree*
(Hey, Marimo, have you said hello to Poppy yet?)
BeavoBeeeavo?
(And have you had a chance to haunt Woody more?)
MarimoI'm afraid not, on both counts. No time for a family
reunion at the moment.
MarimoI mean, sure, I peeked in on both of 'em, just to
make sure they're doing all right.
MarimoBut they both need to make their own way in the
world...feel things out for themselves.
MarimoSo I've decided to let them be for the time being.
MarimoWhen the time is right...I'll intervene. Just not yet.
MarimoWord of advice, [Name 6]...
MarimoYou show a lot of promise, but there's always more
to learn. You're still a sapling.
MarimoAnd...that's that. I'm afraid I don't have the time for
more visiting right now.
MarimoFarewell!
Beavy*slap* slap* *skritch*

(Yeah, look at him go!)

(Good old Marimo!)
BeavoBeeeavo...
(Yep. I just wish he didn't have to leave so soon...)
PoppyWhoa! Are those what I think they are?
PoppyI can't believe it! You got the Beaver Beams!
But how?
WoodyBeavy and Beavo made them? Well, that's weird.
Since they're dogs and all.
PoppyEh, whatever. My clever little doggies! Good boys!
WoodyYeah, those "pups" always did have a weird way
of helping out Marimo.
WoodyAnd I was always the one gluing my own hands
together and panicking... Oh, the memories.
WoodyIt's funny, though. Sometimes I feel like Grandpa
is watching over me.
WoodyIt's like I can actually hear his voice! It's really
pretty creepy, to be honest.
PoppyWell, whatever. Now that we've got those beams,
let's hurry up and make that cushy chair!

WoodyAll right, I suppose it's time we got on with it and

EVERYONE, though!
PoppyOh! I'm sorry. But I'm really proud of you for doing
that! It shows you're taking your duties seriously.

compliment or encourage me. Maybe it's OK!

to make. Try asking the chap at the furniture shop.
WoodyOh, he wants a Custom Wooden Chair? That's a tall
order. Uh...maybe my sister, Poppy, can help...
WoodySo...your next step is to actually make the chair.
Wait—you don't have the materials?
Uh...ask Sawyer for help.
WoodyI know this is a tough craft, but keep chipping
away. You'll get there.
SawyerWoody is the Master, and the best Carpenter I know.
But his self-confidence could use a little work.
SawyerThere's a Woodcutter by the name of Forrest out in
the east woods.
As your first Carpenter task, why not pay him
a visit and ask for some materials?
SawyerWoody's house is in the Artisan District. Good luck
tracking him down... He's a slippery one.
SawyerHey, were you able to find Woody? He's legendary
for disappearing randomly. Just like Marimo...
SawyerOK, here's the skinny. The Custom Wooden Chair is
a Marimo original.
You'll need Dandelion Cotton and Beaver Beams
to make one.
Now, Dandelion Cotton is easy to find. You can just
buy it in the Artisan District.
But Beaver Beams...man...I'm not sure where to
get those.
SawyerYou actually tracked down some Beaver Beams?
Wow, I'm impressed!
Now you just need the Dandelion Cotton, and
you'll be all set.
If you don't already have some, just check out the
shops in the Artisan District. Good luck!
SawyerIncredible. You actually did it! You crafted a
Custom Wooden Chair!
ForrestIf ye need more logs, just help yerself, OK? I dinnae
have time tae gift wrap 'em fer ye.
GoodwoodFeel free to browse our artisanal furniture. Mmm...
Can't you just smell the quality?
GoodwoodI'm counting on you, [Player].
PoppyDon't mind me—I'm just taking in the lovely scent of
wood furniture. That's how Poppy rolls.
PoppyI know you're just starting out, but I have a good
feeling about you, [Player].
I think you're going to really nail Grandpa's chair!
BeavyBeeeavy.
(Woody's probably inside the house.)
BeavyBeeeavy?
(Oh, do you wanna make something?)
BeavyBeeeavy?
(You want Beaver Beams?)
BeavyBeeeavy!
(Go for it!)
BeavoBeeeavo!
(Poppy's shopping!)
BeavoBeeeavo!
(Go for it!)
BeavoBeeeavo!
(Better bring two Oak Beams!)
BeavoBeeeavo!
(Give it your all!)
TaylorIf you've run out of Dandelion Cotton, just check out
the shops in the Artisan District. You can skip the tutorial quest and rank up to a
Fledgling Carpenter if you want.
Continue with the quest?
[Choice: Yes / No]
WoodyWhat? You just want to be a Carpenter right away,
with no instruction? All right! Phew! I'm saved!
SawyerAw, c'mon, Woody. The least you can do is NOT
celebrate. Proper schooling is important!
WoodySure, but this student doesn't want to BE a
student...right?
[Choice: That's right / Actually...]
WoodySee!
WoodyOK...so, uh, that's it then, right? Uh...I'm not
actually sure how this part works...
SawyerHere we go again...
WoodyI think I need to give you some basic information.
Yes...that seems right. Sawyer, help!
SawyerSorry, chief. You're on your own here.
WoodyBut...but...but...PLEASE?
Sawyer*sigh* Fine. Here you go, kid. Everything you
need to do this job.
WoodyOh, thank you, Sawyer. Now there's just the small
matter of the license...
SawyerRight. And that's all you, Woody. You're the
Master, remember?
WoodyYes, yes, of course! *ahem* Let's see...
WoodySooooo, one Carpenter's License, coming up. Uh...
SawyerYou can do it, man! Take a deep breath.
Woody*huff* *huff* *huff* Whew. That does seem to help.
So I guess I'll just give you some Stars?
WoodyAnd...yay. That worked. Congratulations!
WoodyI'll be sure to let everyone know you're ready to
do some real carpentry right away.
SawyerBrilliant. You're doing great, Woody.
WoodyAm I really? Oh dear. Now you've jinxed it!
Woody*huff* *huff* *huff* OK, I just need to keep going...
It might be a bit weird when the other Carpenters
pretend to know you, but just go with it.
WoodyAnd of course, even though you're totally taking the
easy way out, you deserve to be a Carpenter.
SawyerDang! That's cold, Woody.
WoodyOh...I'm sorry. When I'm nervous like this, I just
blurt things out.
WoodyUh...so I think that's everything. Be sure to report
back to me occasionally to get credit for your work.
SawyerGood...good. Almost done, Woody...
WoodyAnd if you could just go ahead and get awesome
and then take over as Master, that'd be great.
SawyerWoody!
WoodyEr...sorry.
