Woody and Cherry's House

I get a lot of would-be Carpenters coming and asking me to take them under my wing. I don't know why they'd want a fool like me for a teacher! Heh...

The Fledgling Carpenter Following Greatness

Oh geez. Oh boy. Look, I'm not really cut out for this. Just give me a moment here, OK?
I'm sorry! It's just...this person standing here in front of me wants to become a Carpenter. And, well, you know...it's kind of my job to make that happen. Oh boy...
Well...if you say so...
So...uh...carpentry. It's a lot like...oh, I don't know. It's a lot like...flying a kite.
Because...um...they're both things you can do on Saturday. Or Tuesday, I suppose. Or any day, really.
I guess that's not a very helpful analogy. Let's see. Uh, carpentry is kind of like...gardening. Uh...
I'm not? Oh, that's what I was afraid of! Aw, geez...
OK, let's start over. So you want to be a Carpenter! Hoo boy, where to begin?
Well, I guess the first question you gotta ask yourself is...do you like wood shavings?
Because this job is, like, 99% wood shavings. And 1% splinters.
And...uh...it's helpful if you like the smell of wood. Because, boy, it's everywhere!
You...you do like the smell of wood, don't you?
Right. Well, I may not look it, but I am in fact the Carpenter Master around here.
That is...uh...I've got a Masterish level of skill when it comes to carpenting things...uh...
I have no idea what I'm doing.
Oh, this is like my worst nightmare come to Life...
Yes! No! I don't know! I can't do this! Here—just take this saw and get out of here!
Congrats—you're a Carpenter. See you later!
Well, my work here is done. Sawyer can take over now. Whew!
Oh no!
You found me! I mean...hello.
Look, I'm really sorry. It's just...try not to sneak up on me, OK?
All right. Let me just catch my breath. *huff* *huff* *huff*
Almost got it! *huff* *huff* *huff* *huff*
*huff* Hmm. I thought maybe you'd get bored and leave. Well, at least my heart rate has gone down...
Strange, I'm actually feeling sort of calm after all that deep breathing. Ahhh.
So you must have crafted some Oak Beams, right? Is that why you've come to my house?
Well, that's a great first step. Sawyer must be doing a good job teaching you.
You're both doing so well...and here I am, barely able to hold a conversation...
Well, the least I can do is teach you some useful techniques.
Got 'em? Good! Wow, that was actually pretty easy!
Although...I feel like I'm forgetting something. Oh no, I knew this was too good to be true!
Oh, Woody! You were on a roll! Come on, think...
Oh, right, the Fledgling challenge! Yes! No! I have no idea what the challenge should be. Oh dear...
Er...how about you...make a very hot cup of tea? No, that's too easy. Hmm... Maybe if you run a lap around Castele Castle in under eight minutes...
Huh? Who is that?
But...I already tried that! I guess it DID seem to help before...
OK. Here we go. *huff* *huff*
*haaaaah* *haaaaah* *haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah*
*huff* *huff* *huff* Hmm...
Wow, I feel so much better! Thanks...uh...whoever you are.
Wait—was that just a voice in my head? Maybe I really am going mad!
Bah, who cares! I feel so good, I don't even mind. Oh, and I've thought of a challenge for you.
I popped into one of the furniture shops earlier today, and the merchant had a custom order for me.
But I was feeling so distracted and nervous that I had to decline. So maybe you can take care of it!
Yes, I think that would make for a fine challenge!
Now, I'm afraid I don't remember ANYTHING about the order. I had a lot on my mind, you see.
So you'll need to meet with the gentleman yourself and then go ahead and complete the order.
I'll be waiting here practicing my breathing...
Beavy and Beavo made them? Well, that's weird. Since they're dogs and all.
Yeah, those "pups" always did have a weird way of helping out Marimo.
And I was always the one gluing my own hands together and panicking... Oh, the memories.
It's funny, though. Sometimes I feel like Grandpa is watching over me.
It's like I can actually hear his voice! It's really pretty creepy, to be honest.
Gee, Poppy. Thanks for lending a sympathetic ear...
All right, I suppose it's time we got on with it and made that chair.
There's just one more technique you'll need...
Oh...really? I mean...uh...great? Now where was I? Oh dear... I've lost my place. Sawyer, help!
But...but...but...
Oh...you're right. I've really got to learn how to do this whole Master thing eventually...
So...this procedure isn't all that different from crafting a simple beam.
That is to say, it's not EASY per se...but...
Aw, heck. You've got the skills, kid. Now all you need to do is...er...avoid panicking!
Hey, you pulled it off!
Yes...look at the level of detail in this carving. Grandpa Marimo himself would be impressed.
I didn't make it. This is [Name 1]'s work.
Heh, yeah, you got me. You didn't have to tell EVERYONE, though!
Oh, well, thank you, I guess. Anyway, it's time to tally up the score for [Name 1].
Let's see, how do I do this again? Ah, yes...
You're a real Carpenter now. Congratulations!
Gah, that voice again! It's haunting me!
Although...for some reason it always seems to compliment or encourage me. Maybe it's OK!
Anyway, never mind that. Listen up, [Name 1].
You'll need to report back to me periodically if you want to advance as a Carpenter.
As your Master...it still feels weird to say that...I can't wait to see how your Life goes. Good luck!
Um, could you just check with Sawyer about the details? OK, thanks. Bye.
See, the thing is...I'm not sure what you're supposed to make. Try asking the chap at the furniture shop.
Oh, he wants a Custom Wooden Chair? That's a tall order. Uh...maybe my sister, Poppy, can help...
So...your next step is to actually make the chair. Wait—you don't have the materials? Uh...ask Sawyer for help.
I know this is a tough craft, but keep chipping away. You'll get there.
What? You just want to be a Carpenter right away, with no instruction? All right! Phew! I'm saved!
Sure, but this student doesn't want to BE a student...right? [Choice: That's right / Actually...]
See!
OK...so, uh, that's it then, right? Uh...I'm not actually sure how this part works...
I think I need to give you some basic information. Yes...that seems right. Sawyer, help!
But...but...but...PLEASE?
Oh, thank you, Sawyer. Now there's just the small matter of the license...
Yes, yes, of course! *ahem* Let's see...
Sooooo, one Carpenter's License, coming up. Uh...
*huff* *huff* *huff* Whew. That does seem to help. So I guess I'll just give you some Stars?
And...yay. That worked. Congratulations!
I'll be sure to let everyone know you're ready to do some real carpentry right away.
Am I really? Oh dear. Now you've jinxed it!
*huff* *huff* *huff* OK, I just need to keep going... It might be a bit weird when the other Carpenters pretend to know you, but just go with it.
And of course, even though you're totally taking the easy way out, you deserve to be a Carpenter.
Oh...I'm sorry. When I'm nervous like this, I just blurt things out.
Uh...so I think that's everything. Be sure to report back to me occasionally to get credit for your work.
And if you could just go ahead and get awesome and then take over as Master, that'd be great.
Er...sorry.

The Carpenter's Tale

All right! All that's left to do is celebrate. And craft things out of wood, of course. Good luck!
Congratulations! We're all excited to see where this Life leads you.

Woody

Whenever I get stressed out—like, whenever someone talks to me, basically... I kinda just start drifting off and daydreaming...and it's always the same dream. Grandpa Marimo is there, and he's scolding me and criticizing my work...but with a laugh and a smile. Then I snap out of it—usually covered in sawdust and alone. Weird, huh?
I get a lot of would-be Carpenters in here asking if I'll take them on as students. But they're usually gone by the time I finish stuttering and stumbling through my first sentence.
Congratulations! You're a real Carpenter now! The more you produce, the more crafts you'll learn. You should probably start stocking up on materials!
Sorry...I'm busy right now. Can you come back later?
OK, I've got a little bit of advice for you. I know it's strange, but I'm feeling oddly confident right now. Don't rush while you're crafting! Pretty basic, right? But I see people making this mistake all the time. I know...there's a timer right in your face, stressing you out. But if you want high-quality items, just relax and let the craft come to you. Accuracy counts! High-quality weapons are more effective...and high- quality furniture sells for more Dosh. Keep practicing—you'll get the hang of it. Upgrading your saw can help too. Good luck!
There's nothing like getting into a real groove at the workbench and producing a high-quality item. Isn't it cool? You start with a bunch of raw materials and end up with something worth a ton of Dosh!

It might seem boring to craft the same thing over and over again...but there's a reason to do just that. See, if you make the same item a few times, you'll memorize the craft. Then you can work in bulk! It's a great way to make sure you always have a full stock of essentials, like beams. You should talk to my former pupil, Decker. I think he lives in Port Puerto. Anyway, he's a Master of automatic crafting...and he might be able to teach you a thing or two. Say hello for me if you end up running into him!
Working in bulk can be a real time-saver, but it's true that it doesn't offer much experience. Still, if you need 50 beams in a pinch, there's no other way to go! Have you talked to Decker yet? He might have some tips for you. He's in Port Puerto, remember?

If you ever feel frustrated...well...it's understandable. Carpentry can get pretty complicated at your level. Just try to remember this is a pretty relaxing Life, all things considered. We don't have to fight dragons or swing heavy pickaxes in the hot sun. We just have to hammer and saw and glue and lathe and...ahhhhhhhh! Sorry. I got carried away.
Wanna know a secret? My little sister, Poppy, is probably a better Carpenter than I am! But she won't commit to a Life of carpentry... She just dabbles. Oh well!

Hey, nice work leveling up! Uh...I'm sorry—I didn't think to get you a gift. Hmm. Let's see. How else can I mark the occasion? I know! I'll tell you an interesting fact! Er...did you know that Carpenters really like eggs? Bear with me—I swear it makes sense. See, eggs and omelets raise your Vitality and Dexterity...which are both critical in our craft. Yep, I eat about 20 eggs a day! That's not, like, TOO many eggs, is it?
Eggs, eggs, they taste so good! The more you eat, the better your wood. The better your wood, the more Dosh you can make... When you sell all your crafts at the marketplace!
Eggs! Have you had any eggs today? Man, I just LOVE eggs! Wooooooooo! What? How dare you accuse me of accepting Dosh for product placement! Why, I simply love the taste of farm-fresh EGGS filled with eggy goodness! This message brought to you by the Farm Guild of Castele...er...I mean, me.
Wow, congratulations on making Master rank! Now you're on my level! Which...uh...makes me kinda nervous. Oh, I'm not worried about you taking my job. Actually, I'd LOVE that. Can you please take over my Master duties immediately? No? Ugh, well, anyway...I was going to say it makes me nervous to offer you any new coaching now. But...I'll try my best to continue guiding you, even though you don't really need any guidance. All right—congratulations! Now let's never speak of this awkward conversation again.
I'm really impressed that you've made Master rank already, but I think you could go even further! Someone with your level of skill could make it all the way to the top. Why not become a Hero? Or go for Legend? Or even a... What's beyond Legend? Go for THAT.

You made Hero rank? Wow, that's amazing! And that's in SPITE of my being your Master! Hope I didn't slow you down too much on your way to the top, kid. Although...clearly I haven't. Being your Master has actually been good for me too. I'm more confident than ever. So...thanks! Oh, and believe it or not, I think I can still offer you a challenge. Here goes... Can you make me a Destiny Bow? It's for a Hunter friend of mine.
Did you know that the Carpenters and Hunters have history that goes way back? I mean, it makes sense. The Hunters need someone to make them high-quality bows... and us Carpenters need security and delicious foods. Looks like you've got an opportunity to help revive the ancient tradition. Get to it!

You're a Legend. No, I mean literally—you've achieved Legend status! I have to admit I'm proud to have been your Master. Even though, uh, it was a little rocky at the start... I just hope I've been a tiny part of your success. Just a crumb of the credit is all I need.
You know, I think you're probably the best Carpenter in Castele... No, wait. I forgot about Poppy. She's the best. What? I'm not just saying that because she's my sister. She really has skills!

Hey, pal! How's it going? Anything new to report? You've WHAT? Almost achieved the Creator rank? I've never even heard of that. Are you serious? Well...I'm at a loss. I feel like I did the day we met... completely flustered. So...you're probably WAY beyond anything I can teach you...except... Maybe you can make THIS. It's a craft I've struggled with for years. Good luck!
Now that you've told me about the Creator rank, I really hope you get there. So please report back once you make it! Or, heck, come and see me even if you don't. We can talk about wood shavings! And other exciting stuff too!

Well, you did it. You've reached the Creator level. What, you don't think I'm suitably impressed? Well...uh...what if I told you I'm barely holding back a flood of emotions and excitement? WOOOOOOOOOOO! See? I lost control for a second there. Congratulations!
OK, I've had a chance to catch my breath, and now I offer you a more levelheaded response. *ahem* YEEEEE HAW! Oh! Sorry—thought I had all of that out of my system. Seriously, this is great news. Congrats.

All right, let's just tally up your results.
Sorry, but it looks like you haven't done anything particularly noteworthy...
Congratulations, Apprentice [Player]! We're glad to have you as a Carpenter!
Congratulations, Adept [Player]! Keep up the good work.
You're now officially an Expert Carpenter, [Player]! Congratulations!
Well, this is a momentous occasion! Congratulations, Master [Player]! That's it for me, then. You can take over all my teaching duties right away. Ha! Gotcha. Anyway, an achievement like this deserves some special recognition. Let's get everyone together and have a little party, shall we?
Uh...oh boy. I feel like...like I did the first time we met. That is...hmm...I'm completely at a loss for words. I mean, I've never even MET a Hero before! OK, Woody, get ahold of yourself. You've come a long way. Catch your breath. *huff* *huff* Whew. That's better. Now, down to business. OH MY GOSH, YOU'RE A HERO! That is...you've achieved Hero rank as a Carpenter! Well done. Simply amazing! The king himself wants to see you. He said he has something for you! He probably wants you to make some sort of special cabinet or something, but that's another story... Anyway, congrats! Keep up the amazing work!
Attention, everyone! We have a living Legend in our presence! Stop what you're doing and behold! Um...why don't you go ahead and do something befitting a Legend now? No pressure. Ha ha! I'm only kidding. But your Legend status is no joke! I can't believe how far you've come. You should go and visit King Erik right away. I'm sure he'll have something special for you. I'm honored to have been your teacher and Master. Congratulations!
You're still a Fledgling...but not for long, I suspect. Keep working and you'll see results!
You're still an Apprentice for the moment. Keep chipping away!
You're still an Adept Carpenter. But that's not too shabby! Keep up the good work.
Hey, you're an Expert! It won't be long until you're a Master, like me.
Well done, Master Carpenter! I'm really proud of you.
You're still a Hero. What, you expected to move up again so quickly? Have you visited with the king yet? You should get on that. He'll probably have something nice for you.
Have you met with King Erik since you earned the rank of Legend? What?! When a king summons you, it's generally kind of important you show up, you know. So what are you waiting for? You're making me look bad! Get on with it!

Hello there, [Player]. How can I help you? [Choice: Report / Chat / Forget it]
*snooze* *snooze* HUH? What? What's going on? Oh, [Player]! Do you need something? [Choice: Report / Chat / Forget it]
It looks like you're not really focusing on your Life as a Carpenter right now. *sigh* I blame myself. Well, anyway, if you become a Carpenter again, come see me! I'd love to chat.
Hey, [Player]! How are you? How's Life as the top Carpenter in Castele? You're still looking for a challenge? Well, I mean... I'm just a lowly Master. What could I offer you? Although, come to think of it...I did find something interesting when I was cleaning up the other day. It's one of Grandpa's old crafts. It was actually ripped in half and crumpled up! See, he never could get it quite right. I think he got frustrated and just trashed it. So if you want challenging, this should do the trick. Anyway, why don't you think about it? Then come back and see me if you want to try it.
Hello, [Player]. Can I help you with something? [Choice: Special Request / Chat / Forget it]
So you want to try your hand at making a [Name 2]? [Choice: Let's do it / Not right now]
All right! This is exciting! I'll try to help you as much as I can...but mostly I'll stay out of your way. If I remember correctly, Marimo said the materials came from the top of Mount Snowpeak. Come talk to me when you've got all the supplies, and we'll get started. Good luck!
Oh, really? That's too bad. I was really curious if you could actually pull it off! Well, if you change your mind, I'll be here...
You know what, [Player]? I bet you could make any craft in Castele! You really are that good.
My goodness...the legendary [Name 2]. I never thought I'd see it! Here—take these. It's a little something in recognition of your accomplishment. What are they? Well...er...I don't exactly know. Maybe you'll find some use for them.
Let me know if you want to try the challenge again. I'll give you another one of those coins, so it'll be worth your while.
According to Grandpa, you can find everything you need for the [Name 2] in one place... It's all on Mount Snowpeak! If anyone can get this thing made, it's you.
You...you're giving up? Aww...but I really wanted to see a [Name 2] in real Life! [Choice: ((Yes...it's too hard / ((No! I'll try again!]
That's the spirit! Don't stop now, friend. Just let me know when you're ready. I'll be waiting!
Oh...OK. I guess that's the way it goes. Well, if you change your mind, I'll be here.
Oh! I have one more thing for you. Take a look at this craft. I've never heard of ANY of the materials! Crazy, right? Anyway, you keep this. Who knows? Maybe one day you'll even figure out what to do with it. Heh.
