Tale of Lunares: Chapter One

Good work, soldier. Now if you will please see it back to the castle intact.
Oh, and by the way...
Don't go thinking that just because something crashed into your roof it belongs to you.
We don't live in that type of society. That Doomstone will be studied for the good of all Reveria.
So don't bother straining your little cerebrum over any of this.
I'm sure you'll be looking forward to my findings. Good day.
Well met, squire! Where is the Doomstone? Point me to it. Quickly now!
What are you babbling on about, man?! I have no... "hand" men in my employ. Left or right!
Now how would they know how old my tootle is...?
This is bad. If the Doomstone gets into the wrong hands, the consequences can be catastrophic.
Huh? What's that?
Oh, it's you. From the smashed-roof incident.
What are you doing here? Do you have something to do with the rising incidence of Doomstones?
*gasp* I...have...NEVER been...stupid in my Life!
Especially not in front of a talking butterfly! You know, you would make a very good specimen...
Hey, near-miss kid. How about letting me have the butterfly? [Choice: Take her / Never!]
Oh, on the contrary. It was a scientific wish, that's all. I will note you in my research journal.
But that is for another time. Right now, we must retrieve that Doomstone.
Onward, troops! Let's go get that Doomstone!
If one of you happens to find the stone, do be a dear and let me know, won't you? Ta.
Stop there! Right there! You there!
You can't keep me out with a sign that says keep out!
Such a poorly crafted sign in this area basically screamed, "Hey! The stolen Doomstone is in here!"
So then...where is it? Where is the Doomstone?
What?! That shattered piece of— YOU DESTROYED A PRICELESS RESEARCH THINGIE!
Oh, my sweet little artifact! Oh, what have they done to you?!
Why am I even watching this maudlin display? Tell me what happened with the stone!
I see. Cracking the Doomstone, eh? Hmm... I hadn't considered such a barbaric action.
So it relinquished its hold on the animal, and we now have this rather exquisite piece here in shards...
I must return to the castle and reconsider my current research strategy.
You lot can make yourselves useful and transport the remnants of the Doomstone back to the castle.
After that, please clear the wreckage blocking the West Grassy Plains. It's an embarrassment.
I reluctantly offer you my congratulations for somehow neutralizing the Doomstone's power.
I shall remember you in my acceptance speech for the Shwenke-Oafenfhaatz Prize.
To the castle! Quickly now!
Finding those goons is just a matter of time. With logic, I shall deduce their hideout.

Tale of Lunares: Chapter Two

There is simply no other way.
You should read The Crucible of Snuggling. You may find it helpful in your career as a Life Master.
You soft, squishy, maudlin fool.
That is exactly how children control adults. You give them the castle, and they'll take the kingdom!
Give them a shoe and they'll take the pair! Give them an acorn and they'll take the oak! Give them a curd—
Sage, humble, and handsome, yes, I know. Regardless, the king's opinion is final.
That will be all. Good day.
No, really, Sir Mustang, you are dismissed.
It's all right, sire. It's only that talking butterfly and her silent companion. Did the Minister let you in?
I knew that man had a weakness for winged insects.
Pardon my impudence, King Erik, for speaking so candidly, but you don't have time for this.
Is it hot in here, or is it just...heh heh... I believe that it is indeed hot. I evaluate this room to be hot, yes.
*ahem*
As he said, His Majesty has a meeting on cabbages or hay, or whatever it was. You should go. Now.
Violent beast...*murmur murmur*...deadly fangs... *murmur murmur*...makes a ferocious...*murmur!*
Napdragon...*murmur*...kill...and be sure to smile. *Murmur?!*
First, we shall render the beast unconscious using my newly developed Murmur Spray...
Princess Laura. Why am I only mildly surprised but majorly annoyed?
Princess Laura, I can assure you that you need not bother yourself—
Usurp? Aha ha ha.
Oh, Princess! Oh ha ha ho, when you use big words like usurp, it's just...so... Ah ha ha ha ha!
Ahh haa haa... Nefarious! Oh ho ho... Machinations! That's...that's very good, Princess!
*hack* *gasp* Oh my, you must forgive me. I just about laughed up a lung there. *cough*
Princess, you know I have been in the service of your father for quite some time now.
I'm sorry, but...hee hee...you have the wrong idea.
We're here to help the Napdragon. Not make it a part of some...hee...nefarious usurping machination.
Yes. Unfortunately, he wasn't very fond of my new Princess Leash.
Desperate times call for desperate measures, Princess. I can't have any meddling with my work.
Just your being here jeopardizes our mission.
I can see that you still have no understanding of this, Princess. Your father locked you up to protect you.
It was for your own good. And now you have put yourself in harm's way.
If you hadn't been under watch by some...clearly incompetent guards...
you would have run straight into the jaws of the Napdragon's fury!
They are not rumors, and yes, they are true. A Doomstone has crashed into Mount Snowpeak.
We are investigating the matter, but it appears these stones are now creating chaotic dangers.
Animals filled with a Doomstone's energy are acting increasingly aggressive.
Now, can you imagine the energy of a Doomstone and adding a dragon's unbridled wrath to it?
No, of course not. Because all you see is a cute, sleepy beast with eyelids at half-mast.
Princess, we are all aware of your fondness for the Napdragon. But you must be aware of reality.
You must accept the truth of what we are seeing happen all over Reveria right now.
Your father took precautions to keep you safe.
We're seeing a massive increase in Doomstones. This must be related to the Lunares phenomenon...
Blast! See the delay your interference has caused us!
Princess, stop! Come back!
I feel so sorry for her father. He's a good man.
You two! Why don't you make yourselves useful and stop her before she gets fried to a royal crisp!
It seems you've gotten to the root of the problem by destroying a Doomstone...once again.
The Napdragon seems to be back to its docile self.
We must find out why these Doomstones are causing this frenzy inside the animals of Reveria!
Baseless and... Ha ha. Pay it no mind, Princess. I think I owe you an apology as well.
This entire situation could have been much worse had you not been here to talk with the Napdragon.
I was mistaken to have suggested you be locked up...and leashed.
I was joking! Sort of... I mean...yes. I apologize.
*ahem* Pardon me for interrupting, but I believe the dragon may be referring to that treasure chest there.
So it's true. The Napdragon was entrusted with the task of guarding this sacred treasure.
It was only to be given to the most worthy of all adventurers.
It appears you two occupy some most rare air.
Extraordinary...
That was indeed very strange.
But if her words are to be believed, Your Highness...
then perhaps the Doomstones are falling across all of Reveria.
Oh, those pirates can't settle their own business, much less deal with someone from another land.
Yes, my king!
Captain Mustang, you worry too much.
We must make haste. Thank you for your visit.
I have a bad feeling about all this... Please hurry, [Player]!
Having a dragon in your debt... I am envious. From a scientific standpoint, of course.
A diligent effort, [Player]. But remember, you're only as good as your last.

Tale of Lunares: Chapter Three

[Player]! Butterfly! What are you doing wasting your time chatting with the guards?!
Or a better question is, why are you guards wasting their valuable time? They are here on royal business.
Forgive these buffoons. They know not what they know not. Please, follow me.
Yes, well, Your Grace, if I may...
According to the legend, the Goddess Cog is only one of a unique set of treasures.
Dubbed simply the Goddess Treasures, these items were given as gifts to each land in Reveria.
If we are to believe this legend, it would mean there are other treasures outside of Castele.
Port Puerto and Al Maajik would be specific areas of interest for us.
I regret that I cannot surmise what the significance of these treasures is.
However, I do believe these items are somehow connected to what is happening with Lunares.
I also think that the...phantom girl we saw on the top of Mount Snowpeak has something to do with all this.
It would be most helpful should she choose to appear before us again so we could speak with her.
I must say, I am happy to see my first impression of these two as fools was quite wrong.
No offense.
Regardless, I think it's time we sent these nonfools on their way, Your Grace.
You're very welcome.
Although I've never been one to spout terms like "Egads!" I nearly did here. Our faith was rewarded.
"The Goddess entrusted each land with a secret from Lunares." These secrets are the Goddess Treasures.
The treasure you brought back is full of secrets. I will examine it and let you know of my findings later.

Tale of Lunares: Chapter Four

Allow me to explain, if you will, Your Grace.
So far we have been able to procure two of the three Goddess Treasures.
If the information I've dug up in my research is true, there is another Goddess Treasure in Al Maajik.
Princess, your father is right to err on the side of caution here. Now, if I may continue...
Al Maajik is a harsh land. Factor in the wild beasts and the Dark Sultan, and it is downright dangerous.
This is much more dangerous than simply taking a jaunt to Port Puerto.
The Dark Sultan's heir has now come of the age where he will take that vacant throne.
With a new Dark Sultan on the throne, I believe now is the time to seek a final resolution.
Not at all, Your Grace. I was thinking of a more... diplomatic solution. But one no less dangerous.
This situation is most precarious. And time is of the utmost essence here, my dynamic duo.
I...I don't think it works like that, Your Grace. Delivering a request to Al Maajik will not be easy.
Heh heh, well, while Al Maajik is often considered to be an archaeological paradise...
I'm afraid there are pressing matters here I must attend to. I think we should leave it to these two.
With the Dark Sultan...?
Your treasure-hunting skills have not gone unnoticed either. Yes, we may still require your services...
You may leave it to me, Your Highness. I will begin examining it right away.
Of course, the Ancient Ruins in Al Maajik are filled with a plethora of intriguing research subjects. Perhaps this warrants some much-needed time off. *ahem* For, er...research purposes, of course.
Do you know how the Doomstone came to be known as such? Originally, it was mistaken for an onyx gem, no doubt because of its dark color. That name since fell out of use. What was left is the name we now use today. ...Well, at least that is one possible explanation.

Tale of Lunares: Chapter Five

Correct.
Correct.
Well, I shall try to ignore Butterfly's dramatics and get right to the point.
THERE IS A FOURTH GODDESS TREASURE!
Thank you. I felt the moment warranted such a point.
Now, if I may... According to legend, the Goddess entrusted a treasure to each land in Reveria.
In other words, to Castele, Port Puerto, and Al Maajik. This we already know.
But what we didn't account for is a treasure that went to a fourth land.
Not true, Princess. We have overlooked this fourth kingdom because its ruler is not...human.
Exactly. I speak of the governor of all wild beasts, The Great Spirit! Often thought to be all but a myth...
...
...Well, we hadn't really gotten that far, Your Grace.
We've come too far to stop now, Queen Ophelia! We already have three of the treasures.
If you know something, in the name of science and for the good of Reveria, I beg you, please speak.
Based on what Queen Ophelia said, we know we are seeking a wooded area.
She said it is their "desire" to keep it secret. So the question is, who are "they"?
Your Majesty, I know I need not remind you the Elderwood is filled with wild beasts.
If a powerful stone were to affect a large number of these beasts all at once...
Soldier, come with me.
Most interesting. How could this have gone unnoticed all this time?
This monument is composed of the same material as Castele's Goddess Statue.
Perhaps there are other artifacts of this type in the forest. If so, that would mean...
We must press onward. I am not satisfied with simple conjectures.
Who are you?! Identify yourself.
What? I swore no such oath.
We will do no such thing. We are here on a research expedition ordered by King Erik himself.
Hey! Don't you disappear into thin air on me!
So this is The Great Spirit of the forest... I guess it wasn't just a legend, after all...
Life can be many things! Some of us prefer to spend our days working rather than engaging in trifles.
We have been busy gathering the Goddess Treasures.
Thus far, we have the Goddess Cog,
the Goddess Anchor,
and the Goddess Compass!
And yet, all of this splendidness has brought us to an impasse!
For legend tells that the Goddess bestowed a fourth treasure to a race that was not human.
We believe the Goddess did bequeath such a gift to you and your people.
It is this final treasure we desire!
O Great Spirit! Tell us of your treasures!
Erm...no. I thought that's how people talked to you. My first time here. Sorry.
Well then, if I may speak plainly, it is clear that these treasures are mere parts of a greater whole. Or should I say...a greater hull.
YES! I love it when I'm affirmed by big...spirit bears...
You're speaking of the mythical Goddess Ship of legend, yes? It really exists?!
I've never come across anything called a Spirit Tree in any of my research.
The fourth Goddess Treasure!
And to think here it has sat all these years...
Good question. It looks...quite well kept.
Oooh hoo hoo hoo! An ancient vessel! Gimme, gimme, gimme!
...Fascinating... Yes... Yes... Hmm... AHA!
But if that goes into there, then that means this must come out here, which would mean this—
Oh, sorry, Princess! I didn't realize anyone else was in here.
It looks...glorious. The ship itself is in mint condition. The mechanisms are all in place.
I'm still not certain of all the intricacies of the engine.
I think I understand the basic structure, but I'll still need a bit more time with it.
Yes, well...about that...
The ship shares several design characteristics with our contemporary airships. However...
the engine is composed of several mechanisms I've never seen before. I need time to examine them.
Time and manpower.
LOITERERS TO ATTENTION!
We need all the help we can get. If you're willing to work, then please climb aboard.
We hope to be off shortly.
Forest dwellers have been mentioned in the surviving folklore, but still...I had no idea!
This must be the engine. But this mechanism...? Hmmm...
Looks like we've got a lot of work to do here. You just get some rest and leave it to me!

Tale of Lunares: Chapter Six

The Doomstones of late have been much larger and have appeared with much more frequency...
I had never even contemplated such a theory, which makes me suspicious, but yet...
A youngster who, at first glance, appeared to be a run-of-the-mill no-goodnik but became a great help.
Now that we are of one mind, we must take action.
It appears that we are all overlooking something.
Whoa. That is weird. The Goddess Ship in the Elderwood!
... Yes, the, uh... That's the ship said to have carried the Goddess from Lunares to Reveria.
Was that what you had in mind earlier, Pino?
I'm sure getting it repaired will not be a problem.
But, alas, the ship will not fly, I'm afraid.
Of course. The reason it won't fly is not a problem with the machinery itself.
It's the lack of...fuel.
It would appear the engine uses a resource that is specific to Lunares.
Without obtaining a high-octane Floatstone, I'm afraid we won't be able to fly the ship.
That's right.
Unfortunately, that will be of no use.
According to my calculations, even with all the Floatstones in Reveria, we will lack sufficient power.
It would need to be a Floatstone of exceptionally high, um...floating power, to use a scientific term.
Oh, well, that's helpful. Do tell us, then, O great Falcon, where is this island located?
Falcon...yes. I believe I've met him before.
I had to reach out to pilots from across the land when I was investigating the Goddess Ship.
He was one of them. I must have slipped and told him of the summit.
My apologies, Your Grace. The man is utterly harmless, I assure you.
Well, he was indeed known as the best pilot in Castele for quite some time. His word went far.
Writings from the time the Goddess lived among us do mention a place called Sumwhare Island...
But no such island exists on any atlas or map.
Which leads me to one conclusion...
If it actually exists...then, yes. Possibly. Maybe.
Even if that were the case, there is no guarantee he would succeed in finding such a place.
A Floatstone of this size should easily power the Goddess Ship.
If you're Yuelia's sister, that would make you...
Ha ha ha ha ha! Charming. Yes, but it would also make you a daughter of the Life Goddess, is what I was getting at.
Academic opinion is divided when it comes to the possibility of traveling to Lunares.
Although, if we think of the sky as a sort of shell surrounding Reveria, as Yuelia described...
then perhaps Lunares could be considered...
Gladstone!
The former king of Castele! In all his, well...most of his...bare glory!
So wait... He watches all of us? All the time?
Enough about the holes in the castle wall! We should be concentrating on the hole in the sky.
I've done some rough calculations, taking into account this Floatstone's power...
and it appears there is only enough to power the airship with at most...two passengers.
Yes, well...maybe the inhabitants of Lunares don't weigh as much as we do? I'm not sure...
I knew it!
...No.
Any objections?
There's one. And now who else should go?
*I don't believe so, Your Grace.*
Quickly now. We are in a race against time!
Well...actually, yes. It's a good line. And this was an appropriate time to use it, thank you very much.
I'll go get the airship prepared.
To get that airship in flying shape as soon as possible, we're going to need a few hands.
Would you mind a large group of humans staying in your forest village while we conduct repairs?
Does Terra Nimbus exist? If so, how is it possible it is suspended in the sky, I wonder...
You've confirmed the existence of Terra Nimbus. Your contributions to science will be remembered.

Tale of Lunares: Final Chapter

We're cutting it a bit close, aren't we?!
By my calculations, they'll be able to just squeeze through! Of course, I've been wrong before...
I know not when you shall return, yet I shall be waiting. We shall all be waiting. That's all we can do.

Flutter 013 Professor Hughes

Fine. But only one autograph—
Oh. It's just you two. What can I do for you?
Besides humor you while you interrupt my work, that is.
I wonder, where is that volume on talking animals...?
Just where does that voice of yours come from, anyway? Hmmm...?
I can't believe you have vocal cords.
Or perhaps you create some sort of verbal vibration by beating your wings?
Or perhaps you're hypnotizing all of us right now. Perhaps you're making us all dream this...
There is something going on with you. I don't know what it is yet, but I'm going to find out...
Ah, yes! That's what I was looking up. The Goddess Cog is neither wood, stone, nor metal...
It is made of a material the likes of which I have never seen before!
It is said to be millennia old, and yet it shows absolutely no visible signs of wear!
I am not frustrated in the least. I am absolutely livid!
This mysterious object has the audacity to...to...to exist before me and refuse to divulge its secrets!
But my mind shall prevail! I will not give in until I have stripped this of every last secret!
If you don't mind, I need to study these royal manuscripts in peace and quiet.
It's clear that in order to solve the mystery of this artifact, I must approach it from another angle.
For your information, I am quite busy with numerous tasks right now!
Preventing the Napdragon from becoming filled with the Doomstone's power was just one item.
The threat of these Doomstones is far greater than we had imagined before.
And we are no closer to neutralizing the stones without shattering them.
Yes, monsters in the area will be fueled with rage. Very good, butterfly. We all know that part.
Such affected monsters have been reported to attack one another. Very unorthodox behavior.
But rather than justified attacks, it seems these monsters are being controlled somehow.
The question no one is asking is, why do the Doomstones only have this effect on monsters?
Numerous people, including myself, have come into contact with these Doomstones.
And yet, there hasn't been a single case of humans turning...into...shadowy...
Perhaps that...key...understand...Doomstones...
Yes, Mummy, I shan't be late for school!
Ah, sorry about that. I must have dozed off there. I am quite deep sleprived, you see.
Of course! Sleep is for ordinary folk. Ordinary... folk who need to sleep.
Why would I waste my time with such a pointless activity when I have my Elixir!
If you ever need a pick-me-up, try one!
They restore your HP and SP immediately! A triumph of the muman hind, if you...ask me!
How can one sleep with so many mysteries to solve?!
I won't rest until I have solved every mystery in Reveria! I simply cannot rest until then!
...You apologize to Dinky! He's my monkey! Oh my! Sorry...I dozed off again, didn't I?

Flutter 032 The Lunares Airship

It's a pleasure to see you working so diligently, Pierre! Keep it up!
Well. I see. That's quite all right. As far as I'm concerned, it matters not why you're working...
only that you are working. If we can get this ship operational, everyone will stand to benefit.
Easy enough. Go fetch me the parts I requested from the village.

Flutter 039 Crashing the Castle

Well, I suppose that wraps up our investigation.
However, I would like to continue my research a while longer if it please Your Grace.
Someday Reveria could find itself facing this or a similar threat once again. One never knows.
As such, it would be logical to record the necessary measures to avoid disaster in the future.

Flutter 042 Castele's Kid King

Did you perchance make it to Origin Island?
So you found it!
Well done, Your Grace.
I, for one, have many questions to ask of our new friend, if I may be so bold.
Are you wearing the traditional garb of your people? I believe I've seen this in an old scroll...
Well, what types of Life are available there on the island? How advanced is your technology?
Oh, and eating habits! I must know about those. What about writing systems? And art forms!
Getting back to the greater research matters at hand. Could you describe the layout of your cities?
I assume you've reached a level of urban dwelling and are not a nomadic culture.
As a population grows, it gets denser, making larger communities. This is, of course, a spatial matter...
but one cannot ignore the importance of changes in communicative behavior during the process.
Are you scattered in small, close-knit communities? Or grouped into large ones with looser ties?
The biggest difficulty in controlling population flow is having many people arrive together in the same area.
...Directing traffic, so to speak. So how is the flow of the inhabitants controlled on your island?
Fine. If you all want to go on living in ignorance, go right ahead. But I'm asking my questions...
Indeed, indeed! I have barely begun with my questions! There's much work to do!

Hughes

I'm very busy with my research right now. Please go and bother someone else.
The night breezes around Castele are so refreshing after a hard day's research.
I cannot believe I have acquired two such fascinating specimens in so short a time! Eee hee hee heeee!
The night breeze soothes an overworked mind.
Leave the Goddess Cog to me! I have this mystery cracked. As soon as I...sit here a moment...
I often find that the answers to perplexing puzzles are brought to me by the cool night wind.
Leave that Port Puerto Goddess Anchor to me.
Even geniuses get back pain from hunching over their research for too long.
Leave the Goddess Compass to me!
I am known around Castele as a man of fashion. A superior mind needs superior packaging.
It's certainly been perfectly preserved. You could put it straight into a museum!
Lunares looks almost completely dark. It appears time has almost run out.
Restoration of the ship is complete. The more intricate repairs will require an aviation expert.
If all goes well, I look forward to claiming credit. Now, enjoy your trip.
The world is saved! And now that we know how to save it, we can do it again the next time!
I have always hoped to repay the king's kindness with some research breakthrough. Now I have achieved that goal. In no small part due to you. I thank you...
Did you make it to Origin Island?
Did you make it to Origin Island?
I admit I was skeptical. And yet Origin Island exists!
I admit I was skeptical. And yet Origin Island exists!
It appears that you have managed to save another world and discovered an ancient culture! Not bad.
Apparently, Origin Island has an ecosystem quite unlike Reveria's. I must go on a research sabbatical. You can come too. And carry my equipment.

Origin Island: Chapter One

I do apologize for the sudden summons, but it was quite necessary, considering the circumstances.
Oh, ha ha ha. Come come, Yuelia. We're friends, after all. Call me Huey.
Understood. Well, I wanted to find out what you know about Origin Island. You've heard of it, yes?
Origin Island was the birthplace of the Furlin. Furlin, as you may not know, are disciples of the old gods.
Many thought this place was simply a myth. Some even called it the Isle of the Gods.
Yet the great old tomes of Reveria tell quite a convincing tale...but an incomplete one.
Yuelia...as the child of a goddess, we would like to call on your expertise.
I see. Well...that's quite a disappointment.
I was fascinated by ancient history as a youngster, but recently I've been distracted by...modern events.
I've been poring over the most ancient books and scrolls we have, but...as the kids say, not much dice.
However, I did find one reference to the isle within an ancient text in Gladstone's possession...
It was a single drawing depicting humans and Furlin coexisting peacefully on Origin Island.
It is crudely drawn, but the picture also shows a friendly god smiling down upon the people.
Yes, with a drawing I happened to stumble upon: Peoples of Ancient Reveria.
I hypothesize the drawing depicts the ancestors of we modern-day Reverians.
You must forgive my excitement. It's just...we could be on the verge of unearthing something here...
something massive. Origin Island could be the key to unlocking Reveria's past!
Had it not been for what Noelia said, I would have never thought Origin Island would be found.
It would be a shame for science to turn a blind eye to the fact that we know...where a god lives.
Maybe we should try to pick his brain. You know, about the funny doll featured in that drawing...
Either? It's shown to be in the center of a gathering, at the feet of the god...but perhaps revered itself.
I believe it would be about two to three feet tall, with small slits for eyes and a tiny, round mouth...
a trapezoid face, with radiating stonework, and arms like...well, like oversized dinner forks.
It seems this type of ancient doll was simply known as a Dogu.
But it is difficult to put their appearance into words. I must borrow the text from Gladstone once more.
Or yes, there you go! You could just look at that doll there. That pretty much looks like it.
Thank you, Furlin. Yes, that doll pretty much looks like the one in the drawing. Dinner forks and all.
Oh, good. This means I don't have to go all the way up to Gladstone's again. My sciatica... WAIT.
Do...gu?
THAT'S THE DOLL! But-but what is it doing here? Answers! We need answers! Answers to questions!
And where on earth did you two find it?!
A storage room! Of course! I should've known!
Wait. WHERE?! In a WHAT?! It wasn't fossilized or encased in ice or...some other scientific thingie...?
Beans?! What do legumes have to do with this?
Yes, fine...go talk to your father. I just can't handle the fact that... A storage room?!
Yes. If it truly is him in that drawing together with the doll, perhaps it will jog your father's memory.
Although it's odd to think that a god would forget something. I have much to think about here...
Good luck to you all. I'm going to go try to... unravel my brain a bit.
It's difficult for me to rely on others as a researcher. So please go...before I start crying.
