Mustang
Where to find
Lines
— Tale of Lunares — 4
You there! Did you see a blue-capped urchin—
*ahem* I mean...have you seen an oh so charming
yet much too fast for his own good young boy?
Thanks for the information. And clear that dust mote
out of your eye!
You heard the talking butterfly! Back to town, boys!
— Tale of Lunares — 18
My liege, with the utmost respect, what you're doing
is tantamount to imprisonment!
What do you mean no other way?
She could at least be allowed to roam freely through
the castle!
OK, Hughes, I get it! For the Life of me, I don't know
how a man as smart as you can be so...
You mind that tone of yours, Hughes. Such a fine
silver mustache that you wear...
It would be a shame if you woke up one morning to
find it gone.
...
My liege! I must return to my duties!
And you two!
Please...do what you can.
Your father felt guilty for locking you up, so he went
to your room with an Apple Pie as a peace offering.
Yes, sir! You, men! Be controlled!
What if it's trying to say it's hungry?
I'll muster up the manpower, Your Grace!
Your Majesty, please! Don't give them any ideas!
Ah, yes. Quite funny...gallows humor, Your Grace.
The Napdragon seems to have disappeared from the
Grassy Plains. Be very careful.
We'll hold the dragon here. You find that nest!
Overthinking things is better than not thinking at all...
— Tale of Lunares — 9
What is going on here?! What are you all looking at?!
Get back to your posts!
I'm not falling for that old—
WHAT DID YOU DO TO THE MOON?!
Well, I certainly doubt it's a good omen!
What was Hughes saying...?
Bah! He's been saying so much Razorbeak baloney
about Lunares lately, I can't remember...
Men...
Return to the castle at once!
— Tale of Lunares — 2
Your Highness! Please! You mustn't run up here!
It's too dangerous!
*...Licking apple pie off your robe tied you up...*
— Tale of Lunares — 8
Sir Mustang, if you please!
I suppose I can forgive you...considering you used
to be a butterfly and all.
We appreciate what you've done for us. You two
shall be legendary. Don't you agree, Sir Odin?
Why, Sir Odin here was just telling me how he was
witness to your bravery in Al Maajik.
Isn't that right, Sir Odin?
"Why, yes, it is, Sir Mustang. I must also say that I've
heard many tales of your own bravery, good sir."
Oh, go on, Sir Odin...
...OK, well, as fascinating as this is, I should return to
my post. You two go on inside. Everyone is waiting.
Sir Odin! It has indeed been an honor meeting such
an esteemed and noble Maajiknight.

The Fledgling Paladin 68
Well, what do we have here? Another Paladin
hopeful, are you?
Very well. The name's Mustang. Captain Mustang
of the Paladin order. The pleasure is yours.
Before we begin, a word of advice: I do not tolerate
mustache-related humor. Mark these words well.
That said, I am bound to teach any able-bodied
recruit the ways of the Paladin. Onward to valor!
Now your first lesson. A Paladin's duty is to
protect Castele and maintain a state of peace.
Without any further ado, I offer you the tools of
our trade...
Take with your right hand the longsword, dispenser
of glorious justice.
And in your left, grasp firmly an oaken shield,
symbolizing a Paladin's oath to protect.
With these instruments of righteous justice, you
shall become a humble servant to peace.
Never forget: protecting our fair kingdom is your
top priority as a Paladin.
I see you are eager. That is good. However, you
are but a Novice.
It will serve you well to remember this fact as you
begin your journey.
But I have no doubt that through tempered
discipline, tireless resolve, and diligent training...
you may one day rise to the very top of our
hallowed order!
A fellow cadet is waiting for you outside. Her name
is Roslyn.
She will school you in the basics of being a Paladin.
I believe you will learn much from her.
I do not mean to burden you with undue pressure,
but I foresee many heroic deeds in your future!
Hold it, you two!
Be advised—I heard everything.
Now the only question is...is it all true?
Get ahold of yourself, Paladin! Your apple munching
doesn't concern me...at the moment.
No, I'm more concerned about the possibility of a
thief running free through our peaceful streets.
Is that right?
Well, your initiative is impressive. Consider it noted.
But I cannot allow you to be so reckless.
There is a fine line between bravery and buffoonery.
And I need to help you recognize it.
If there are rogues out stealing apples, you can bet
they're armed. So let me teach you a new skill.
I expect exceptional results!
Ho, Paladins! Welcome back.
It seems you two have had a rather exciting first
assignment.
You've done a fine job. And I don't say that lightly.
I've even heard kind words from the castle.
Don't let this go to your heads, but you have a
bright future in our order.
But of course! Do you know of another castle?
Princess Laura herself mentioned you by name.
In fact, she told me to pass along a gift of untold
value to the both of you...
Her utmost gratitude!
Yes, yes, very well. Let's move on to the formal
assessment, shall we?
Fine work, soldiers! I am pleased to officially
welcome you to our ranks.
Now, don't think this means you can rest on your
laurels. I expect you to continue training diligently!
May your early promise lead to future heroics.
Dismissed!
Well, what are you waiting for? A fellow recruit by
the name of Roslyn is waiting for you outside.
At this point it would be prudent for you to
introduce yourself to the other recruits.
Hail, recruit! Apprehending those fiends was a
challenge well met, but I'm afraid you're not finished.
Return to the Appleseed Café posthaste. Duty calls!
Soldier...are you certain?
You wish to obtain your Paladin License without
further training?
I am, of course, required to allow you to make this
decision...but it is not one I recommend.
As it currently stands, my mustache is fitter to
perform the duties of a Paladin than you are.
And yet you decline the opportunity to learn from it.
I will ask one more time: Are you certain?
[Choice: Yes / No]
So be it.
I am bound to respect your wishes. If nothing else,
you have proven to be determined.
And rushing into battle completely unprepared
indicates a...certain type...of bravery.
Very well. I shall move forward in presenting you
with your Paladin License, as is my duty.
However, there is nothing in the rule book preventing
me from giving you a piece of my mind first!
Indeed. I may simply stand here and filibuster until
I bend your will to my command.
Oh ho! I'd chatter until my mustache falls clean off
my face if I thought it would make a difference.
But...consider yourself lucky. I won't.
Rather, I will offer only three pearls of Paladin
wisdom.
First! A blade is not merely a weapon, but the very
hand of justice!
Second! A shield is more than a sheet of metal. It's
your duty to protect, taken physical form!
Third! A Paladin is the very harbinger of justice.
Where we go, peace follows.
Fourth! With tempered wisdom and tireless resolve...
What? Did I say THREE?
Right. Well, I suppose I'll spare you pearls 4
through 36.
Without further ado, I now bestow upon you the
title of Fledgling.
You are now...technically...a Paladin.
I will inform the others in our order posthaste.
And, not to worry, I shall make certain they treat
you as they would any other Paladin.
Still, it would be wise to go about introducing
yourself to the others as soon as possible.
Do remember to report back to me periodically
with any notable achievements.
After all, each achievement is a step forward—not
only for us, but for all of Reveria!
Despite my stern lectures, I wish you nothing but
success.
The Paladin's Tale 2
Thus concludes your induction ceremony.
Dismissed!
Well, I believe congratulations are in order! As your
captain and mentor, I am most pleased.
Paladins' Hold 2
I'll only say this once, so listen well. My name is NOT
Boomerang Mustache.
I don't know how that silly nickname came about.
I mean... Well, I do have a boomerang mustache.
But even so! It is simply not acceptable. ...Gah.
Never mind.
Let's just get back to work, shall we?
Ah, there you are! Good timing. I wanted to ask
you something.
Is my mustache perhaps...just a tiny bit strange?
I see. Well. I thank you for your candor.
Chat 51
A Paladin is, by definition, a fearless and selfless
hero who has pledged service to Castele.
Indeed, even in the face of terrible monsters and
overwhelming odds, Paladins show no fear.
There's a saying. "The only thing to fear is fear itself.
And Captain Mustang." Memorize it!
There are 17 things that bring me joy. The
first is to see my enemy defeated in battle.
The second is to hear the sweet chirping of the
birds come springtime.
The third...er...how much free time do you have at
the moment, soldier?
Very well, we'll resume this conversation at a more
convenient time.
Just know that seeing young Paladins like you
succeed is somewhere on the list.
Around number 14, I believe.
This hold is the base of our operations. From here
we can survey and protect all of Reveria.
Anytime you step outside these doors, be sure to
keep your wits about you.
Er...it's important to keep them about you while
you're still in here too.
I see you are persistent. That is commendable.
However, I have no new information for you.
It would serve you well to venture forth and apply
that persistence...er...somewhere else.
Very impressive, cadet. You have recognized the
importance of checking in with your Master.
As a reward, please accept this small offering.
Use it wisely!
One does not become a Paladin in search of fame
and fortune.
Nay, we toil in relative obscurity and poverty. A
calm and peaceful kingdom is our only reward.
Mark these words well, soldier. Dosh cannot
purchase happiness!
Admittedly...it can purchase more durable armor
and formidable longswords.
So...good luck with that!
Hail, recruit! I take it you have had time to make the
acquaintance of some of your fellow soldiers?
Splendid. However, there is one more individual
with whom it would be wise to meet.
He resides in a cabin on Mount Snowpeak and has
many fascinating tales to tell.
If you seek him out, be sure to mention you have
mastered the Lightning Strike technique.
And do be respectful. After all...he INVENTED that
technique!
In addition to being one of the most decorated
Paladins in history, Sir Gladstone is...well...
He's one of the most decorated Woodcutters,
Tailors, Cooks, Miners...
Well, to put it simply, the man has mastered every
known Life! He has a lot of wisdom to offer...
Well! It seems you have been hard at work.
Most excellent!
Tell me, have you found the Luminaire technique
to be of use during battle?
Continue practicing. Using that very technique,
I was once able to subdue a rampaging Napdragon!
What's that? You're curious about my legendary
battle with the Napdragon?
Well, have a seat, my young friend. It is a tale as
fascinating as it is long.
It all began on my ninth birthday. I was a precocious
lad, already obsessed with swordplay and strategy...
That very year, my dear aunt Katherine gifted me
a genuine soldier's—oh, I'm sorry.
You don't have time for this, do you? Well, let's just
say...it was a draw.
As for how my sword ended up inside the
Napdragon's belly...well...I'd rather not say.
You are moving up the ranks quickly, soldier. So I
believe the time is right for a gentle reminder...
We, as Paladins, fight to protect the citizens of
Castele. We do not wage our own battles.
We have a word for those who would fight for Dosh
or personal glory: Mercenaries.
Now, there is nothing wrong with being a Mercenary.
Fact is, there are times when I wish I was one.
But we are a peacekeeping order...an order of
discipline. Do keep that in mind.
Long ago, there was a supremely talented
Paladin recruit.
This soldier's abilities rivaled my own. Surpassed
them, even, in certain situations.
I was confident this soldier would one day be my
Master...and in a way, that has held true.
Well done, Paladin. Today you have accomplished
something extraordinary. You are a Master!
Remember, with the Master-level distinction comes
a whole new level of responsibility.
Think of yourself as a role model for younger
Paladins. And for the citizens of Castele at large.
And above all...remain modest! We wouldn't want
anyone mistaking you for a Mercenary, would we?
Please accept a small gift, cobbled together from
the humble Paladin coffers.
One final note. You now have my permission to
begin growing a mustache.
Now that you're a Master Paladin, I can share
certain...secrets...with you.
For example...I can now teach you my devastating
Stache 'n' Slash technique.
Bwahaha! The actual secret I'll share with you today
is that I possess a devastating sense of humor.
Some call me the Guardian of Castele. Others
call me...well...a certain mustache-related name.
But never mind that! The question is...what will
people call you?
Will they call you Dragonslayer? For today, I offer
a formidable challenge...
There exists a ferocious beast whose mere breath
can level an army. It is called the Shadow Dragon.
I challenge you to slay this beast, if you haven't
done so already. Are you up to the task?
The best advice I can dispense with regards to
defeating the Shadow Dragon?
Avoid its breath. This is not a mere suggestion.
This is a requirement if you value your Life!
May your sword strike true and your resolve hold
fast. Good luck!
Hail, Legend! Please forgive any forthcoming
awkwardness on my part...
I am not used to speaking with a more highly ranked
Paladin than myself!
Of course, technically I am still your Master. But you
are clearly one of the greats.
In fact, it is possible that you are the greatest
Paladin Reveria has ever seen!
Although...there exists another who may hold some
claim to that title...
Are you familiar with the tale of the two Paladins?
Well, allow me to enlighten you!
Many years ago, two promising Paladin recruits
fought at young King Erik's side...
In the course of battle they distinguished themselves
among the greatest warriors Castele had to offer.
However, one of the two Paladins clearly performed
at a higher level. And the other one was me!
This heroic Paladin was wearing a visored helm,
making identification impossible.
Speak not a word of this...but I believe the second
Paladin may have been Queen Ophelia!
Well, well! It appears you have accepted a
particularly daunting challenge!
Of course, for a Paladin of your caliber...perhaps
it will be child's play.
Nevertheless, you must know that your fellow
Paladins ride with you in spirit. Onward to valor!
I must say...you show more poise and promise each
time we speak. Well done, soldier.
I knew this day would come. Congratulations. You
have achieved the Creator rank!
I confess, in the early days I worried that you would
turn into another Dosh-chasing Mercenary type.
But I'm happy to see you've proven me wrong.
Congratulations again, Paladin. Truly well done.
You have achieved the highest rank possible for a
Paladin! Perhaps I should become YOUR student.
Oh, ho! That's not going to happen.
Frequent check-ins are the hallmark of an efficient
Paladin. Now then, let's see how you're doing!
It doesn't appear you have accomplished anything
of note since we last spoke, soldier.
There is no shortage of heroic tasks awaiting you in
Reveria. Come back when you have completed one.
Please accept my hearty congratulations! You are
now officially an Apprentice Paladin.
Your new rank comes with new responsibilities...and
new strength, as well.
Allow me to teach you a new skill, one which is
highly effective against multiple adversaries.
Begin practicing immediately! The Life you save
may be your own.
Your progress has been truly impressive.
Congratulations on making Adept!
Word of your good deeds has made its way
across the kingdom. Your reputation is growing.
Keep up the good work. But don't let the publicity
go to your head, soldier.
You are familiar with my manner by now, I should
hope.
And so you should understand I do not engage in
false puffery or dole out light praise.
Therefore, you understand the significance of the
following: WOO-HOO!
You have achieved the Expert rank. Truly well done,
soldier. Keep up the good work.
Today you and I stand on equal footing. For today
you have become a Master Paladin.
It is an honor to have helped you achieve this level.
But much of the credit belongs to you alone.
Now...enough chatter. On an occasion like this, we
should let down our Paladin guard and celebrate.
What are you waiting for, soldier? Let's party!
What a momentous occasion. I am truly at a loss
for words.
Of course, surely there exists some combination of
words that could adequately express my pride...
But I find myself in the unenviable position of not
being able to arrange any in a satisfactory manner!
I...I... Well, look at me. I'm blathering like some kind
of professor. Get to the point, Mustang!
*ahem* You've exceeded the Master rank and
become a Hero! A tremendous accomplishment!
Your first assignment as Hero? Go and see King
Erik immediately! He has a little something for you.
Go now! I will work on a proper congratulatory
speech in the meantime.
←,
You remain a Fledgling. My advice? Get out there
and practice, practice, practice!
Congratulations on making Apprentice, soldier.
You're on your way to becoming a fine Paladin.
Your reputation as a fair and dependable Paladin
is growing...along with your rank, Adept!
Carry on. I expect we'll have many more
conversations just like this one.
I find it remarkable that you have advanced to this
level so quickly. Congratulations, Expert!
Especially given the way you held your sword that
whole first week...
Er...never mind. You've done extraordinarily well.
Now, get out there and carry on!
Either I am growing old, or you are advancing
at an unprecedented rate!
Either way...I'm proud to announce your promotion
to the rank of Master. Well done, soldier!
Much like my own facial hair, your skills never cease
growing. Soon I won't have anything left to teach.
Congratulations, and keep up the great work.
King Erik has a special reward for those who
manage to reach the Hero rank.
Go now and claim yours! You have earned it.
Have you met with King Erik since becoming a
Legend?
Even for someone at your level, it is not wise to
keep a king waiting! Get on with it, soldier!
Welcome, [Player]. What can I do for you?
[Choice: ((Reporting in, sir! / $$Let's chat...sir! / ((Nothing nada, sir!]
Burning the midnight oil, soldier? Stay alert!
Now, what can I do for you?
[Choice: ((Reporting in, sir! / $$Let's chat...sir! / ((Nothing nada, sir!]
You are not currently a Paladin, citizen! Report
back to me when you rejoin our order.
[Player]! I'm glad to see you.
I have something of importance to discuss.
You are aware, no doubt, of a creature known
as the Ancient Napdragon?
The creature has remained in a semidormant state
for years. Minding its own business, as it were.
This, of course, has led the citizens of Castele to
assume the creature itself is benign.
This is not the case.
In years past, many brave Paladins waged battles
against the creature, only to fall in battle.
It wasn't until Sir Gladstone subdued the Napdragon
that it became...er...sleepy, for lack of a better word.
In any case, reports of aggressive behavior have
been on the rise.
I fear the Napdragon is coming out of its slumber
and returning to its old ways!
I believe with your incredible strength and courage,
we might be rid of the beast once and for all.
Are you ready to take on the challenge of a Lifetime,
soldier? Unless...you've already defeated the beast!
Do not make a decision in haste. Think on it, and
return to me with your answer. Good day.
Welcome, [Player]. What can I do for you?
[Choice: Special Request / $$Let's chat, sir! / Nothing, sir!]
Indeed? You're prepared to do battle with the
Ancient Napdragon?
[Choice: Sir, yes, sir! / $$Never mind, sir!]
That's the spirit, soldier! Now let me brief you
about the dangers ahead.
The Ancient Napdragon can usually be found in
the East Grassy Plains during the daytime.
Its whereabouts at night are not known, so you
must strike in broad daylight.
Once you have slain the beast, collect some
[Name 2] as proof of your victory.
Last but not least, I would like to offer my sword
to assist you in this endeavor!
Success is far from guaranteed...and that's precisely
the way I like it. Onward to valor!
Er...perhaps you're not ready QUITE yet. Just
come see me when you want to depart.
I see. Well, you'll live to fight another day, I
suppose.
And we will need you to do just that...as the
Ancient Napdragon is still a menace to Castele!
Well done, [Player]! Or should I call
you...Dragonslayer!
Castele is a safer place today thanks to your
bravery and selfless service.
Indeed. I did, in fact, receive these long ago.
Gladstone gave me these back when I became
captain of the Paladin order.
They're said to contain a blessing of protection.
I do not know from when these items hail,
but nonetheless, today I entrust them to you.
Come and speak to me if you'd like to take the
Special Request again.
Do it for the glory! Uh, but if that's not enough...
I've still got a few of those coins lying around...
It would seem the Ancient Napdragon remains at
large. It has been sighted in the East Grassy Plains.
Do not underestimate this foe! Prepare well before
engaging in battle with this beast.
This...cannot be. Are you truly giving up on the
challenge?
[Choice: Sorry, sir! / No way, sir!]
